What motivates you to come to work each day? What keeps you going when you’re tired, frustrated, stressed out, or pulled in 20 different directions? These are questions we all ask ourselves at some point. Maricopa County’s Project 13K is an attempt to answer those questions one employee at a time. To reveal the unique paths that brought us together and the values we share.

We began this effort last spring, asking employees to tell us what they do and why it matters. Since then, we’ve turned these stories into videos, articles, interactive cards, posters, and more. Many of them are posted on a special intranet site we created. We want staff to go there to connect with their colleagues, to learn how their story fits into the larger county story, and to ignite their passion for service.

With the New Year comes the second phase of Project 13K. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing some of our favorite employee stories publicly on social media and later on maricopa.gov. We want others to know what we already know: there are a lot of amazing public servants working every day to make Maricopa County better, and if you’re a passionate, hard-working, service-minded person looking for the next career move, there’s a place for you at Maricopa County.

If there’s a story that connects with you, we’d love to hear it. Or if you’re in the government space, trying to engage with employees, we’d love to swap ideas. Want to join the Maricopa County team? You have 50+ departments to choose from.

The “what” doesn’t matter if the “why” isn’t clear. That’s one of the driving ideas behind Project 13K. We hope these stories underscore the “why” behind our service: to improve lives and give people time for what matters.
