Maricopa County Creates a Diaper Bank

Maricopa County’s Human Services Department is providing diapers to eligible families at no cost. The new ‘Diaper Bank’ is made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services via Arizona’s Community Action Association, Wildfire.

The Diaper Bank will distribute more than 700,000 diapers, ensuring that nearly 5,000 children receive a monthly supply of 150 diapers each. This initiative recognizes the challenges faced by families who are forced to make difficult choices between purchasing groceries, covering transportation and housing costs, and meeting the basic needs of diapering their child.

Commenting on the significance of this program for families with young children, Human Services Director Jacqueline Edwards stated, “We understand the financial strain that families face when it comes to providing for their children. The availability of diapers at no cost through our Diaper Bank will allow parents to prioritize their expenses without compromising their child’s well-being. This Diaper Bank is just one more way Maricopa County is working to provide relief to families.”

Diapers can range in cost from $0.30 to upwards of $0.75 each depending on the size and features. This program offers diapers in a variety of sizes from newborn to older children, including young adult sizes for children with special needs. The monthly supply from Maricopa County’s Diaper Bank provides eligible families with approximately $75 worth of diapers per child.

Eligibility

The Diaper Bank is available for Maricopa County families residing outside the cities of Phoenix, Glendale, and Mesa. Families enrolled in Maricopa County’s Head Start program are also eligible. Families must also meet income requirements and be within 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), which equates to an annual income of $45,000 per year for a family of four.

Diapers are distributed every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. while supplies last at the Maricopa County Head Start Office in Mesa at 1001 W. Southern Avenue, Suite 106. No appointment is necessary. To determine eligibility for the diaper distribution program, interested individuals are encouraged to contact the Maricopa County Human Services Department at 602–372–3700.
