April is County Government Month! To celebrate, we’ll be highlighting resources for “Connecting the Unconnected.”

Maricopa County continuously develops services to assist its more than 4 million residents. Some of these services include:

Public Health has been partnering with Dignity Health to create the “First Teeth First” program that provides free basic oral screenings, education and referrals to expectant mothers and children ages 0 to 5 that are not enrolled in kindergarten. Participating children have the opportunity to receive fluoride varnish every six months as well.

In addition, the department offers financial and educational help to pregnant women, postpartum women, children and infants through their Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program. It provides tools for better health and nutrition and breastfeeding support for women in need.

Animal Care and Control had a 95 percent save rate in 2018. The department adopted out nearly 16,000 animals and returned more than 6,400 pets to their homes!

This year, the department is making an effort to introduce the use of technology in the community for better results. Animal Care and Control is pushing for a better way to relocate your lost pet or adopt a shelter animal through the use of the PetHarbor app and Petco Foundation’s sponsored app Finding Rover.

Parks and Recreation connects its residents with nature. Recently, Parks and Recreation completed the “Maricopa Trail,” a 315 mile trail that connects most of Maricopa County’s regional parks.

This year, Maricopa County added a new park to its system, Vulture Mountains Recreation Area. Located near Wickenburg, it’s around one thousand acres. You can learn more about plans for the Vulture Mountains and all of Maricopa County’s regional parks by visiting maricopacountyparks.net.
