Maricopa County is proud to announce the groundbreaking ceremony for Centerline at Glendale, a construction project that will add 368 affordable housing units to the West Valley housing stock. The event will take place at the project site, 6775 N. 67th Avenue in Glendale, on Friday, Mar. 24 at 10 a.m.

This groundbreaking project was partially funded by Maricopa County with an investment of $6 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars. Centerline at Glendale is Arizona’s first affordable housing community to be financed using state low-income housing tax credits.

“Remember what they say about how to eat an elephant: you do it one bite at a time. That’s the mindset we need to have as we look at affordable housing in our region,” said Chairman Clint Hickman, District 4. “It’s going to take awhile to get our inventory where it needs to be, but the addition of nearly 400 new rentals in the heart of Glendale is an example of how we can address our affordable housing shortage with one investment and one partnership at a time.”

The total cost of the 12.9-acre project, developed by Gorman & Company, is $120 million. Other funding partners include the Arizona Industrial Development Authority, state and federal housing tax credits allocated by the Arizona Department of Housing, the City of Glendale, and gap financing from the National Housing Trust Fund and HUD’s HOME program funds.

“Every person deserves a roof over their head and a safe place to call home at a price they can afford. Every single government entity along with our business and nonprofit partners should be working toward that end until we have fully addressed the current housing crisis,” said Supervisor Steve Gallardo, District 5. “I know the County will continue to be a willing and generous partner in finding long-term housing solutions for our residents.”

Construction of the project will take place in two phases. Phase one will build 186 units and phase two will bring an additional 182 units online.

About the Project

The development will provide quality, affordable housing to single individuals, families with children, the elderly, the disabled, Veterans, formerly homeless, and households with special needs. Future residents will have access to on-site wrap-around supportive services, a splash pad, a dog park, a business incubation space, a fitness and recreation center, a 13-acre walking path, and electric vehicle charging stations.

The units will be fully accessible to physically disabled and sensory-impaired residents, and rents for the one-, two-, and three-bedroom units will range from $497 to $1,837 per month, accommodating households earning between 0% and 80% of the countywide Area Median Income (AMI). The development will also contain an on-site commercial kitchen operated by Local First Arizona to serve entrepreneurs running small food-based businesses in the West Valley.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Centerline on Glendale is open to the public. For more information on this and other affordable housing projects funded by Maricopa County, visit Maricopa.gov/HSD.
