The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for October 15, 2020.
LATEST INFORMATION
- 633 cases reported yesterday; 147,964 cases since January. 9% hospitalized; 1% ICU. View demographic breakdown.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: NEW WEEKLY BENCHMARK DATA
Maricopa County continues to see moderate spread of COVID-19. However, all three statewide benchmarks for measuring the spread of the virus in our community are trending upward.
- Cases per 100,000: 52
- Percentage of positive tests: 3.9%
- Hospital visits for COVID-like illness: 2.4%
Public Health is keeping a close eye on this data and encourages residents to be vigilant about preventive measures during this time of increased social interaction.

YOUR SCHOOL QUESTIONS ANSWERED
If you have questions about an exposure notification you received from your child’s school or have other questions about kids and COVID-19, you have three ways to get your questions answered:
1. Check out the Parent/Guardian FAQ’s on our Schools page.
2. Call our COVID-19 Parent Hotline. Dial 2–1–1, then press Option 6 for COVID-19, and then Option 3 to connect to a hotline staff member.
3. Submit your question to our School Health team using this web form.
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS EXPOSED TO AN INFECTED STUDENT?
If you were informed by Public Health or school officials that your child was a close contact with another student or a school staff member infected with COVID-19, you should follow our guidance for quarantine. This includes staying home from school and monitoring for symptoms for 14 days after your child’s last contact with the sick person.
Your child also should refrain from any afterschool activities or sports during this time and limit contact with others outside their household.
FALL ACTIVITIES
Considering a fall event or activity? Don’t forget the basics. Public Health continues to recommend the following to all residents:
- WHEN POSSIBLE — Avoid being in any setting with more than 10 people
- ALWAYS — Keep at least six feet of distance from others when out in public
- WHEN POSSIBLE — Limit contact with those outside of your household, especially if you are in a high-risk group
- ALWAYS — Stay home when you are sick
- ALWAYS — Stay home as much as possible when a household member has tested positive for COVID-19 except to get essential medical care, prescriptions, and food
- FREQUENTLY — Wash hands with soap and water, and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if unable to wash hands
- ALWAYS — Wear a mask or cloth face covering when going out in public
FREE FLU EVENTS
Public Health recommends everyone over the age of six months old get a flu shot this year. Get the vaccine now and you’ll be protected for the entire flu season. Visit maricopa.gov/flu for more information on the vaccine and a list of free flu shot events for adults and kids.

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR BUSINESS, NONPROFIT GRANTS
Maricopa County has already distributed $25 million in federal CARES Act funding to help business and nonprofit owners during a tough time. The money is meant to cover financial losses due to COVID-19. The deadline to apply for grants is October 30. 2020 CENSUS
TODAY is your final chance to complete the 2020 Census. You have the rest of the evening to go online and make sure your family is counted. The Census is the official count of how many people live in our community and determines how much federal funding we’ll receive for key transportation, education, and health care projects over the next decade.

RESPUESTAS A LAS PREGUNTAS SOBRE SU ESCUELA
Si usted tiene preguntas sobre una notificación que recibió de la escuela de su hijo o tienen preguntas sobre COVID-19, hay tres maneras de tener respuestas:
1. Revise las preguntas frecuentes de padres en la página para las escuelas.

¿QUÉ PASA SI MI HIJO ESTUVO CERCA A UN ESTUDIANTE INFECTADO?
Si a usted le informo Salud Pública o personal de la escuela que su hijo estuvo en contacto con otro estudiante o personal docente infectado con COVID-19, debe seguir la siguiente guía de cuarentena. Esto incluye quedarse en casa y monitorear los síntomas por 14 días después de que su hijo estuvo en contacto con una persona enferma.
ACTIVIDADES DE OTOÑO

- SIEMPRE- Use una mascarilla o cubierta facial cuando salga en público
EVENTOS DE VACUNACIÓN CONTRA LA GRIPE GRATIS
Salud Pública recomienda que todos desde lo seis meses se pongan la vacuna contra la gripe este año. Vacúnese ahora y se protegerá para toda la temporada de gripe. Visite Maricopa.gov/gripe para más información sobre la vacuna y vea la lista de eventos gratuitos para niños y adultos.

SE ACERCA LA FECHA LIMITE PARA QUE LOS NEGOCIOS Y AGENCIAS NO LUCRATIVAS SOLICITEN SUBSIDIOS
El Condado Maricopa ha distribuido $25 millones en fondos de CARES Act para ayudar a negocios y agencias no lucrativas durante estos tiempos difíciles. El dinero es para cubrir perdidas financieras por COVID-19. La fecha limite para solicitar es el 30 de octubre.
