The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for April 30, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: Physical Distancing Measures Working; Cases Likely Peaked in mid-April
NOT ALL TESTS ARE THE SAME
Do you believe you currently have COVID-19? Or are you trying to figure out if you’ve already had it? How you answer determines what kind of test you would get.
Here’s the difference:
- Diagnostic tests (usually PCR) help medical providers determine whether a person has evidence of active infection. This testing informs our daily COVID-19 case count. Watch the video.
- Antibody tests, also known as serology tests, look for the presence of antibodies that are made by the body and indicate a recent or past infection; antibody tests are not as helpful for diagnosing active infections. Watch the video.
HOSPITALIZATION EPI CURVE
Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 appear to be declining slowly. The latest epi curve shows the hospitalization rate has decreased slowly. This is real data, not a model, that shows that the social distancing we’ve been practicing continues to work. If we can keep our number of hospitalized cases at this level, we won’t overwhelm our healthcare system, and anyone who needs care will be able to get it.
AMENDED “STAY HOME” ORDER
Governor Ducey extended the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” order through May 15 but modified it so that some businesses could open before that. In general, people are asked to continue staying home as much as possible. Both state and county data suggest physical distancing is working and should continue.
UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS
3.8 million Americans filed for unemployment over the past week, with a total of 30 million having filed over the past six weeks. Maricopa County does not handle unemployment benefits (that happens at the state level), but the county does have a number of resources to connect people to jobs.
STIMULUS CHECK UPDATE
Tens of millions of Americans have received their stimulus checks. If you’re still waiting, here are a few things to keep in mind, according to the Treasury Department:
- Social security recipients should start seeing payments this week.
- Veterans Affairs benefit recipients should begin seeing payments by early May.
- Anyone can check the status of their stimulus check and sign up for direct deposit by using the IRS “Get My Payment” tool.

It has been a week of excessive heat in Maricopa County and we all know it’s only going to get hotter. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County provides daily weather outlooks to keep you ahead of the heat (and, eventually, the monsoon). The District is providing this, and many other services, online.

NO TODAS LAS PRUEBAS SON LAS MISMAS
¿Cree que tiene COVID-19? O ¿está tratando de averiguar si ya lo tuvo? Depende su respuesta es como se determina qué tipo de prueba se le realizará. Aquí esta diferencia:
- Pruebas de diagnóstico conocidas como PCR, ayudar a los proveedores médicos a determinar si la persona muestra evidencia de la infección. Estas pruebas son las que se reportan en nuestras estadísticas a diario.
- Pruebas anticuerpo, también conocidos como pruebas de serología miran a los anticuerpos presentes que produce el cuerpo e indica la infección reciente o pasada. Las pruebas anticuerpos no son tan efectivas para diagnosticar si la infección esta activa.
LAS ESTADĺSTICAS DE EPIDEMILOGĺA
Las estadísticas muestran un descenso en las hospitalizaciones por COVID-19. Las más recientes estadísticas muestran un descenso lento. Estos son datos reales no modelos matemáticos que muestran que el distanciamiento social que hemos estado practicando esta funcionando. Si mantenemos los números de hospitalizaciones a este nivel no vamos a saturar el sistema de cuidado médico y cualquiera que necesite cuidado podrá recibirlo.
ORDEN DE QUEDARSE EN CASA MODIFICADA
El gobernador Ducey ha extendido la orden de Quedarse en Casa, Mantenerse Sano y Mantenerse Conectado hasta el 15 de mayo pero se modificó para que algunos negocios puedan abrir antes de eso. En general, a las personas se les ha pedido quedarse en casa lo más que puedan. Ambos el estado y el condado sugieren que el distanciamiento físico está funcionando y debe continuar.
RECLAMOS DE DESEMPLEO
3.8 millones de Americanos han solicitado desempleo esta semana pasada, un total de 30 millones han solicitado en las últimas seis semanas. El condado Maricopa no maneja los beneficios de desempleo (esto sucede a nivel estatal) pero el condado cuenta con un numero de recursos para conectar a las personas con empleos.

- Los que reciben beneficios del seguro social empezaran a recibir sus pagos esta semana
- Los beneficios del Departamento de Veteranos empezaran a recibir sus cheques a inicios de mayo
- Usted puede revisar el estado de su cuenta (cheque) y registrarse para depósito directo usando este enlace.

Ha sido una semana de calor extremo en el condado Maricopa y sabemos que solo se pondrá más caliente.
