The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for September 8, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: COVID-19 TESTED IS HOLDING STEADY; THE PERCENTAGE OF POSTIVE TESTS IS DROPPING
For the past six weeks, Arizona Department of Health Services data show that the amount of COVID-19 testing happening in our state has been relatively flat with between 50,000 and 60,000 PCR tests done per week. However, the percentage of those tests coming back positive has fallen from 10% in late July to 5% in the most recent week with complete data. A lower test positivity provides evidence that there is a sustained decrease in community spread and sufficient testing is available. Anyone who think they need a test is still encouraged to get one.

ANTIBODY TESTING PROJECT BEGINS THIS WEEK
Maricopa County Public Health is partnering with ASU and Mayo Clinic to offer free, voluntary COVID-19 antibody tests in 29 selected communities across Maricopa County. If your community was selected, you will receive a flyer on your door providing more information. Field teams will be out in these communities from September 12–20. Only a handful of participants are needed in each community. No personal or identifying information will be shared outside of public health and all samples and identifying information will be destroyed after the investigation is over.
This testing will tell you if you likely had a past COVID-19 infection and have antibodies to the virus. It will also help Public Health understand what percentage of the population has already been infected with COVID-19 and likely has some immunity to the disease. This information will help public health understand when strategies like social distancing and mask requirements can be safely relaxed.
HELPING CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS COPE WITH THE PANDEMIC
Children and teens can be more susceptible to stress related to the pandemic, and as school resumes, this reaction could be heightened. Parents can help by addressing their concerns calmly; providing honest, accurate information; acknowledging the strong emotions they are feeling; and maintaining routines to the extent possible.

SMALL BUSINESS RELIEF PROGRAM
Recognizing the need to support local businesses and non-profits during an unprecedented time, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved $23 million in CARES Act funds to design and launch a grant program to reimburse organizations for losses incurred during the pandemic. To date, the County has awarded more than $14 million in grants. Interested businesses and non-profits can see a list of qualifications and apply at azfoundation.org/MaricopaRelief.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: LAS PRUEBAS DE COVID-19 SIGUEN, EL PORCENTAJE DE PRUEBAS POSITIVAS ESTÁ DISMINUYENDO
Por las últimas seis semanas, los datos del Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona muestran que la cantidad de pruebas PCR que se están realizando son entre 50,000 y 60,000 por semana. Sin embargo, el porcentaje de esas pruebas que resultan positivas ha bajado de un 10% de a final de julio a un 4% en la semana más reciente. Un nivel más bajo en los resultados de pruebas positivas es evidencia que existe menor propagación en la comunidad y la cantidad de sitios de pruebas son suficientes. EL PROYECTO DE PRUEBAS DE ANTICUERPOS COMIENZA ESTA SEMANA
Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa se ha asociado con la Universidad Estatal de Arizona y la Clínica Mayo para ofrecer pruebas de anticuerpos de COVID-19 gratis. Este es un proyecto en 29 comunidades seleccionadas en el Condado Maricopa y la participación es voluntaria. Si su comunidad fue seleccionada, usted recibirá una volante e información que le dará más detalles.
Equipos de estas organizaciones estarán en las comunidades seleccionadas del 12 al 20 de septiembre. Solo se necesita una cantidad pequeña de personas en cada comunidad que participen. No se dará informacion que lo identifique fuera de Salud Pública y todas las muestras e informacion será destruida después de las pruebas pertinentes.
Las pruebas revelan información sobre si usted tuvo la infección de COVID-19 en el pasado y si tiene anticuerpos. También ayudará a Salud Pública a entender el porcentaje de la población que pudiera tener algún tipo de inmunidad y así saber cuándo podemos relajar el distanciamiento social y otras estrategias como el uso de la mascarilla.
AYUDEMOS A LOS NIÑOS Y ADOLESCENTES A SOBRELLEVAR LA PANDEMIA
Los niños y adolescentes son mas susceptibles al estrés relacionado a la pandemia, y a como se acerca la hora de regresar a clases, pudiera ser mas fuerte el estrés. Los padres de familia pueden ayudar a sus hijos hablando calmadamente, brindando información honesta y verdadera, reconociendo las emociones que están sintiendo y manteniendo rutinas en la medida que sea posible.
PROGRAMA DE ALIVIO PARA PEQUEÑOS NEGOCIOS
Reconociendo la necesidad de apoyar a los negocios locales y agencias no lucrativas en estos tiempos sin precedentes, la Junta de Supervisores del Condado Maricopa aprobó $23 millones en fondos federales de CARES Act para diseñar y lanzar un programa que ayudará a organizaciones que tuvieron pérdidas durante esta pandemia.
