The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for May 29, 2020.

EXCESSIVE HEAT: CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Outdoor activities are generally safer than indoor activities when it comes to COVID-19. However, the extreme heat we’re seeing poses its own health risks.
People living on the streets are among the most vulnerable. Maricopa County has already spent more than $2 million in the past three months assisting people experiencing homelessness. The County is an active partner in working to find heat relief for those individuals at a time when physical distancing has resulted in fewer available shelter beds countywide.

In addition, Maricopa County supports the regional effort, led by MAG, to provide hydration and cooling stations to those in need.

Extreme heat can affect anyone, but children, older adults, and animals are especially at risk for overheating. Public Health works to educate residents so they can stay safe when going outdoors.

DID YOU GET A TEXT FROM PUBLIC HEALTH?
Maricopa County residents who test positive for COVID-19 (through PCR or antigen tests, not antibody tests) can now expect a text message from Public Health to more quickly connect them to information about their diagnosis and reduce the spread of disease. The text will include a link to a secure, confidential form that will gather initial information about their illness and practical guidance.
If individuals do not receive a text message but recently tested positive, they will still be contacted by Public Health for an interview as part of the case investigation and contact tracing process for all COVID-19 cases.

HOW DO ARIZONA CASE COUNTS COMPARE TO OTHER STATES?
Nationwide, reports of new COVID-19 cases and deaths are declining, but not every state is equal. Arizona falls in the middle of the pack in terms of total cases (23rd nationally), cases per 100,000 (37th), and deaths per 100,000 (27th). Increased testing in Arizona has led to higher case counts and reported deaths in recent weeks. However, the hospitalization rate due to COVID-19 has declined slightly in Maricopa County.

The Centers for Disease Control continues to add to its list of possible symptoms associated with COVID-19. You can see the updated list here, or use CDC’s symptom checker to help determine your likelihood of having the virus.
REOPENING SCHOOLS
On Monday, Governor Ducey plans to reveal specific plans allowing public schools to open at the beginning of the 2020–2021 school year. Schools have been closed since March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. CDC recently released considerations for schools to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 as part of re-opening planning efforts.

Air Quality
Triple-digit temperatures often come with another unpleasant side effect: higher pollution levels. With today expected to be the hottest day of 2020 so far, there is a high pollution advisory in effect for Maricopa County.
Unified Command
Maricopa County Unified Command continues to distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) where it is needed most. Yesterday, county staff delivered thousands of masks to first responders in Guadalupe.

CALOR EXTREMO: RETOS Y SOLUCIONES
Las actividades al aire libre son por lo general más seguras que las que son dentro de instalaciones cuando se trata de COVID-19. Sin embargo, el calor extremo también presenta sus propios riesgos de salud.
Las personas que viven en las calles están entre los más vulnerables. El Condado Maricopa ha invertido más de $2 millones de dólares en los pasados tres meses para asistir a la gente que no tiene un hogar. El condado también trabaja activamente con otras agencias para asistir a quienes buscan refugio en tiempos donde por el distanciamiento físico se reduce el espacio en albergues del condado.
Además, el condado Maricopa apoya al esfuerzo regional liderado por la Asociación de Gobiernos de Maricopa (MAG, por sus siglas en inglés) que proveen sitios de hidratación.

¿USTED RECIBIÓ UN MENSAJE DE TEXTO DE SALUD PÚBLICA?
Los residentes del condado Maricopa que dieron positivo a COVID-19 (tras haberse realizado la prueba PCR o antígeno, no de la anticuerpos) pueden esperar un mensaje de texto de Salud Pública para conectarlos a información sobre el diagnóstico y reducir la propagación de la enfermedad. El mensaje de texto incluirá un enlace seguro, una forma confidencial para obtener información inicial sobre la enfermedad y darle pasos prácticos a seguir.
Si las personas no reciben un mensaje de texto pero recientemente dieron positivo, ellos serán contactados por Salud Pública para una entrevista como parte del proceso para darle seguimiento a los casos que estuvieron en contacto con alguna persona infectada.
¿CÓMO SE COMPARA LOS NÚMEROS DE CASOS DE ARIZONA A OTROS ESTADOS?
A nivel nacional, reportes de nuevos casos de COVID-19 y muertes están bajando, pero no todos los estados reflejan lo mismo. Por ejemplo, Arizona esta en medio de todos los estados en términos de número total de casos (nacionalmente somos el estado #23) por cada 100,000 casos (#37) y por cada 100,000 muertes (#27). El hacer más pruebas en Arizona ha tenido como consecuencia más casos y más muertes que se han reportado en las semanas recientes. Sin embargo, el índice de hospitalizaciones por COVID-19 ha estado descendiendo en el condado Maricopa.
LISTA ACTUALIZADA CON LOS SĺNTOMAS DE COVID-19

LA REAPERTURA DE ESCUELAS
El lunes, el gobernador Ducey planea revelar el plan específico para permitir que las escuelas públicas reabran sus puertas a partir del próximo año escolar 2020–2021. Las escuelas han estado cerradas desde marzo por la pandemia de COVID-19. CDC recientemente dio a conocer los lineamientos y consideraciones para escuelas para ayudar a mitigar la propagación de COVID-19 a como consideran la reapertura.
AGENCIAS DEL CONDADO A SU SERVICIO
Calidad del Aire
Con las temperaturas en los tres dígitos viene otro efecto secundario no muy placentero, los niveles de contaminación altos. Hoy se espera que sea el día más caliente del 2020 hasta esta fecha pero también se ha dado a conocer un anuncio de contaminación alta para el condado Maricopa.
Comando Unificado
El Comando Unificado del Condado Maricopa continúa distribuyendo el equipo de protección personal (PPE, por sus siglas en inglés) a quienes lo necesitan más. Ayer, personal del condado entrego miles de mascarillas a los equipos de primeros auxilios en Guadalupe.
CENSO 2020
El índice de participación de Arizona en el censo 2020 está por debajo del nivel nacional. Haga su parte y ayude a que los fondos federales para carreteras, escuelas, cuidado médico y más lleguen a nuestro estado.
