Maricopa County COVID-19 Update

The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for January 8, 2021.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: PHASE 1B VACCINATION APPOINTMENTS START MONDAY
If you are in Phase 1B, you will need to register for an appointment in order to get your COVID-19 vaccine. To start, these appointments will happen at regional sites across the Valley. There are no walk-ins available.
HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR PHASE 1B?
Beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, January 11th, residents in Phase 1B can visit Maricopa.gov/COVID19Vaccine1B for a link to an online registration system operated by Arizona Department of Health Services. You will need to create an account login and password so that you can access the site appointment system. There will be instructions for how to use the registration site to help get you started. Technical support will be available for those having difficulties with scheduling.
Public Health is working with Arizona Department of Health Services on another registration option for those who don’t have access to a computer. More information on a hotline to call to schedule an appointment will be made available as soon as that hotline is up and running.
WHAT TO EXPECT
When scheduling opens Monday for Phase 1B, there may be limited appointments available. These regional vaccination sites, called PODs, are still fulfilling existing appointments for frontline healthcare workers from Phase 1A. Also, because POD sites are regionally spread out, the site with the soonest appointments available may not be the one closest to you.
As more vaccine becomes available, it will be available through more partners and locations.
Remember: there are thousands of people like you who are eager to get vaccinated. Appointments may fill up quickly. We ask that you be understanding of the process. We want you to get vaccinated and we are doing our best to get vaccine into arms as quickly as possible!
INSURANCE INFORMATION
While the vaccine is free to everyone, if you have insurance, please have your insurance information handy. The site may ask you for it so that the POD provider can charge an administration fee to your insurance, but you will not receive a bill. If you do not have insurance, you can still get the vaccine and it will still be free to you.
PHASE 1A VACCINATIONS CONTINUE
Healthcare workers and EMS who are part of Phase 1A can continue to sign up for appointments for either their first or second doses of vaccine. January 10th is the last day that registration will be open only to healthcare workers, so if you are eligible in Phase 1A and need to schedule an appointment, we encourage you to do so in the next few days.

WHERE CAN I GET VACCINATED?
Instead of googling where to get a COVID-19 vaccine, you can head straight to the source. Public Health lists available vaccine location on our website. Just choose the phase you’re in.
You can also search vaccine locations statewide on the ADHS website.
WHAT IF I’M NOT IN PHASE 1A OR 1B?
We know many people are eager to get vaccinated. Maricopa County Public Health follows federal and state recommendations for vaccine prioritization.
While it may not be your turn yet, we will continue to keep you informed in this newsletter, on our website, on social media, and through our many partners so you know when you and your family are eligible to get the vaccine. You can track progress of vaccine distribution and see updates of what groups are eligible for vaccine at Maricopa.gov/COVID19Vaccine. Thank you for your patience.
HOSPITAL CAPACITY AT ALL-TIME HIGH
The increase in COVID-19 patients is putting a significant strain on our hospital system. ADHS data shows COVID-19 patients are using 63% of ICU beds and 57% of inpatient beds statewide. Total in-patient bed capacity is now down to 7%, the lowest it has been during the pandemic. Total ICU bed capacity is also at 7%.
Front-line health care workers need us to take care. To slow the spread, it’s not enough to simply wear a mask some of the time or to stay home when you’re sick except for that one quick errand. All of us need to be consistent in taking preventive measures to decrease our chance of getting or spreading COVID-19. That means:
- Limit contact with people outside of your household.
- Wear a mask and keep six feet of distance when you are around people outside of your household. Remember, outside is safer than inside.
- Stay home when you’re sick, and be cautious even if you feel well in case you’re asymptomatic.
- Follow quarantine guidelines if you have been exposed to COVID-19.
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Get a flu shot if you haven’t already.
- Get a COVID-19 vaccine when it’s your turn.
We recommend these measures because we know they work, but only if all of us do them consistently and correctly. Get more information on preventive measures and what to do if you’re sick at Maricopa.gov/COVID19.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: LAS CITAS PARA LA VACUNACIÓN EN LA FASE 1B ARRANCA EL LUNES
Si usted es del grupo que califica para la Fase 1 B, necesitará registrarse para hacer una cita para la vacuna contra COVID-19. Al inicio estas citas ocurriran en cinco sitios regionales en el valle. NO se aceptaran personas sin cita.
¿CÓMO HAGO CITA PARA LA FASE 1B?
Empezando a las 6 am el lunes, 11 de enero, las personas que califican en la Fase 1 B podrán iniciar el proceso de hacer una cita visitando Maricopa.gov/COVID19Vaccine1B. La página tendrá un enlace para un sistema de registro que es operado por el Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona, (ADHS). Se le pedirá registrarse en el sitio y crear una cuenta con un código para tener acceso al sistema de citas. Habrá instrucciones de cómo debe usar el registro para asistirle en el proceso. También tendrá apoyo técnico si tiene dificultades para hacer la cita.
LO QUE USTED PUEDE ESPERAR
Cuando se abran las citas el lunes, para la Fase 1B, habrá citas limitadas. Estos sitos regionales llamados Puntos de Distribución, están aun vacunando a los trabajadores de cuidado de la salud de primera línea que son de la Fase 1 A. También debido a que los Puntos de Distribución están instalados en varias partes del condado, el sitio que tenga citas disponibles pudiera no ser el que está más cerca a usted.
A como llegue más vacuna, esta estará disponible en mas lugares.
Recuerde: existen miles de personas que quieren vacunarse. Las citas se llenarán rápidamente. Le pedimos que entienda el proceso y que estamos haciendo todo lo posible para administrar las vacunas a tantas personas como podamos en el menor tiempo posible.
INFORMACIÓN SOBRE SEGURO
Aunque las vacunas son gratis para todos, si usted tiene seguro médico por favor tenga su tarjeta de seguro médico a la mano. Este sitio le podría pedir información para que los Puntos de Distribución puedan cobrar la cuota de administración de la vacuna. Si no tiene seguro médico, aun se podrá vacunar y no habrá cobro para usted.
CONTINUACIÓN DE LA VACUNACIÓN EN LA FASE 1 A
Los trabajadores de la salud y servicios de emergencia que son parte de la Fase 1 A se continúan registrando para la primera o segunda dosis. El 10 de enero es el último día que el registro estará abierto solo para los trabajadores de cuidado de salud, así que, si usted califica para la Fase 1 A y necesita hacer cita, le animamos a que lo haga ahora.

¿QUÉ PASA SI NO ESTOY EN LA FASE 1 A O FASE 1B?
Sabemos que muchos están listos para recibir la vacuna. Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa sigue las guía federales y estatales para la prioridad de la vacuna.
Aunque aún no sea su turno, continuaremos informándole por este medio, en nuestra página de internet, redes sociales, y a través de nuestros socios para que usted sepa cuando es su turno. Entérese en que etapa estamos en la distribución de la vacuna y que grupos son elegibles en Maricopa.gov/VacunaCOVID19. Gracias por su paciencia.
LA CAPACIDAD HOSPITALARIA LO MAS ALTA QUE SE HA VISTO
El incremento de casos de COVID-19 está poniendo presión en el sistema hospitalario. Los datos del estado muestran que los pacientes de COVID-19 están usando el 63% de camas en cuidados intensivos y 57% de camas de admisión a nivel estatal. En total la capacidad de camas de pacientes internados ha bajado a 7%, el más bajo que hemos visto durante la pandemia. La capacidad de camas en cuidados intensivos también ha bajado 7%.
Los trabajadores de primera línea necesitan de nuestra ayuda. Para reducir el riesgo, no basta con solo usar la mascarilla en todo tiempo, o quedarnos en casa cuando estamos enfermos, excepto para lo más necesario. Todos necesitamos ser consistentes para reducir la propagación o evitar el contagio de COVID-19. Eso significa:
- Limitar el contacto con personas fuera del su hogar.
- Usar una mascarilla y mantenerse a dos metros o seis pies de distancia cuando este fuera de casa. Recuerde, estar al aire libre es más seguro que estar en el interior de un edificio.
- Quedarse en casa cuando este enfermo, y tomar precauciones en caso de que sea asintomático.
- Seguir la guía de cuarentena si usted ha estado expuesto a COVID-19.
- Lavarse las manos frecuentemente.
- Vacunarse contra la gripe.
- Vacunarse contra COVID-19 cuando llegue su turno.
