The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for July 21, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: TESTING IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE PUZZLE
You may have COVID-19 and not know it. Isn’t it better to know?
If you have symptoms and are unsure if they may be COVID-19 related, take a look at the symptom checker from the CDC and then determine your risk level and need for testing. Most testing is being coordinated through health care providers and the Arizona Department of Health Services. See a list of ADHS testing sites here.
In addition, ADHS Surge Testing continues with thousands of free COVID-19 testing appointments still available in the South Phoenix and Maryvale areas. Testing locations along with appointment times and registration links can be found online at azhealth.gov/SurgeTesting.
MARICOPA COUNTY’S ROLE IN TESTING
Maricopa County is playing a support role in the push to provide more COVID-19 testing throughout the region. The Board of Supervisors allocated federal CARES Act funding to help vendors set up testing sites. More information on those events will be released in the coming days and weeks.
PREPARING FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR
Maricopa County Public Health works with school districts in an advisory role year-round, whether that’s preparing for flu season or dealing with new disease outbreaks. With the current pandemic, Public Health is engaged in regular conversations with school leaders. Public Health provides guidelines that allow school district boards and administrators to make informed decisions based on the latest information about COVID-19 and how it spreads between people.
Maricopa County Unified Command will hold a press conference tomorrow detailing Public Health’s current guidance to schools.
MASKS PROTECT THE WEARER, TOO
You’ve probably heard the phrase “my mask protects you and your mask protects me.” This is true. However, studies also show that masks may offer some protection to the people wearing them, filtering as much as 60% of the droplets coming into the wearer (see references 3, 4, 5 below). It’s also been shown that mask efficiency improves when multiple layers of fabric are used and when using fabric combinations (see reference 6).

GRANTS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES STILL AVAILABLE
Small businesses and non-profits outside of the cities of Phoenix and Mesa may consider applying for a grant through the county’s Small Business Relief Program, which provides up to $10,000 to reimburse businesses and non-profits for lost revenues.

Vote Centers are now open for the August Primary Election. You can search for locations in your area by visiting Locations.Maricopa.Vote, or request a ballot by mail by July 24 at Request.Maricopa.Vote.
Want to help make this a great election? The Elections Department is looking for poll workers, ballot processors, warehouse drivers and more. Safety measures are in place for all staff, including temporary workers.
Planning and Development
Maricopa County is now offering a faster way to get certain home renovation projects inspected. The Planning and Development Department just rolled out virtual inspections for certain permits.

EL PAPEL DEL CONDADO MARICOPA PARA REALIZAR PRUEBAS
El Condado Maricopa esta apoyando y promoviendo los sitios de pruebas de COVID-19 por toda la región. La Junta de Supervisores del Condado ha puesto $25 millones de dólares provenientes de fondos de CARES Act para ayudar a colocar algunos de estos sitios. Más informacion se dará a conocer en los próximos días y semanas.
SE ESTA PREPARANDO PARA EL PRÓXIMO AÑO ESCOLAR
Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa trabaja con distritos escolares como una fuente que brinda guía todo el año, ya sea preparándonos para la temporada de gripe o cuando estamos respondiendo a brotes de enfermedades. Con la pandemia actual, Salud Pública trabaja de cerca con líderes escolares. Salud Pública provee una guía que permite que las juntas de distritos escolares tomen decisiones informadas basadas en lo más reciente sobre COVID-19 y como se propaga a la gente.

LAS MASCARILLAS TAMBIÉN PROTEGEN AL QUE LAS USA
Usted probablemente ha escuchado que “mi mascarilla te protege a ti, y la tuya me protege a mí.” Eso es verdad, estudios muestran que las mascarillas protegen a las personas que las usan, filtrando hasta un 60% de las gotitas que salen de la boca de la persona que usa la mascarilla.
