TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: WE NOW HAVE AN ESTIMATE OF HOW MANY MARICOPA COUNTY RESIDENTS HAVE COVID-19 ANTIBODIES
Results from a serosurvey conducted across Maricopa County show that an estimated 10.7% of residents have detectable antibodies for COVID-19. This means that approximately 470,000 people in Maricopa County (estimated population of 4.2 million) likely have been infected with the virus since the pandemic began, an amount far less than needed to reach herd immunity so the virus won’t spread effectively. The serosurvey provides important data about the spread of COVID-19 in our community, and tells us that we should continue mitigation efforts such as social distancing, mask wearing, and regular hand washing.
KEY FINDINGS FROM THE SEROSURVEY
In addition to telling us how many Maricopa County residents likely have COVID-19 antibodies, the serosurvey found:
- For every case reported to Public Health, there were three to four cases that were not reported up to the time that the serosurvey was conducted.
- The number of true infections is likely far higher than the number of people who are being tested for COVID-19.
- There was a higher seroprevalence, or antibodies found, within households than across individuals, which supports evidence that infections cluster within shared living spaces.
DOES HAVING ANTIBODIES TO COVID-19 MEAN YOU HAVE IMMUNITY OR ARE PROTECTED FROM GETTING INFECTED WITH COVID-19 AGAIN?
Antibodies likely provide some immunity to the COVID-19 virus; however, there’s currently not enough information to know how long the immunity will last or whether past infection with the virus protects you from getting another infection. We also don’t know if you could be infected by a different strain of COVID-19 in the future. As a result, Public Health recommends that people get vaccinated for COVID-19 when the vaccine becomes available, even if they had a positive antibody test.

16% OF ALL COVID-19 CASES IN MARICOPA COUNTY HAVE OCCURRED IN THE PAST MONTH
It has been nearly 10 months since our first COVID-19 case in Maricopa County, and we are now in one of the most challenging phases of the pandemic we’ve seen to date. Of the county’s 177,070 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 16% have been reported in the past month (October 16-November 16). With the holidays approaching, it’s important all of us re-commit to what works including social distancing, mask wearing, staying home when sick, and limiting close contacts with those outside of our household.
HOSPITAL CAPACITY
Taking proven preventive measures to slow the spread of the virus isn’t just about you or your family; it’s about preventing our health care system from being overwhelmed so that people who need hospital care can get it. Right now, the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 is growing. You can view updated data on hospital bed capacity, ICU capacity, and ventilator usage by visiting the Arizona Department of Health Services’ data dashboard.
HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THESE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS?
Take Care is Maricopa County’s program designed to help keep residents and businesses healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the program, county residents can get free COVID-19 testing and free flu vaccinations. Our rent and utility assistance programs help those who are at risk of losing their homes. Funeral assistance helps cover burial costs.
SMALL BUSINESS GRANT PROGRAM UPDATE
Applications are no longer being accepted for the county’s small business and nonprofit grant program. However, hundreds of applications are still being processed. Organizations that applied for grants should get the final word this month. To check on the status of a grant, please email maricoparelief@azfoundation.org.

All ballots have been counted in Maricopa County for the November General Election. With more than 2 million ballots cast, more Maricopa County voters participated in this election than ever before. Final results show 2,089,563 voters cast a ballot, which represents about 80.51 percent of total eligible voters.

Los resultados de la encuesta que se realizó en el Condado Maricopa calcula que aproximadamente el 10.7 porciento de los residentes tienen anticuerpos de COVID-19 que se pudieron detectar con las pruebas. - Por cada caso reportado a Salud Pública, hubo de tres a cuatro casos que no se reportaron durante el tiempo que se estaba realizando la encuesta.
- El número de infecciones reales se cree que son más altos que el número de personas que están haciéndose la prueba de COVID-19.
- Hubo una seroprevalencia más alta en personas del mismo hogar que en individuos de por fuera, lo que confirma la evidencia que las infecciones se daban en grupos dentro de hogares.

Los anticuerpos es probable que provean algún tipo de inmunidad al virus del COVID-19, sin embargo, no existe información suficiente para saber cuanto tiempo dura la inmunidad o si las infecciones pasadas con el virus le protege de enfermarse con otra infección. Como resultado, Salud Pública recomienda que las personas se vacunen contra COVID-19 cuando exista una vacuna disponible, aun si tuvieron una prueba positiva de anticuerpos.

16% DE TODOS LOS CASOS DE COVID-19 EN EL CONDADO MARICOPA OCURRIERON EN EL MES PASADO

CAPACIDAD DE LOS HOSPITALES
El tomar medidas de prevención para reducir la propagación del virus no se trata solo de usted o su familia, es también para prevenir que nuestro sistema de cuidado de salud está saturado para que cuando personas enfermas necesiten atención medica lo tengan. En este momento, el número de hospitalizaciones de COVID-19 está creciendo. Usted puede ver datos actualizados sobre la capacidad de camas, y la capacidad de cuidados intensivos, uso de ventiladores visitando el tablero de datos del Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona.
¿CONOCE ESTOS PROGRAMAS DE ASISTENCIA?
En el Condado Maricopa Te Cuidamos, contamos con un programa diseñado para ayudar a los residentes y negocios durante esta pandemia de COVID-19. Con este programa, los residentes del condado pueden hacerse las pruebas de COVID-19 y ponerse la vacuna contra la gripe gratis. Además, encontrar asistencia de renta o servicios públicos para quienes pudieran estar en riesgo de perder su casa. La asistencia funeraria ayuda a cubrir los gastos de entierro.
ACTUALIZACIÓN DEL PROGRAMA PARA NEGOCIOS PEQUEÑOS
El periodo para solicitar el programa de asistencia para negocios pequeños o agencias no lucrativas ha concluido. Sin embargo, cientos de solicitudes están siendo procesadas.
