The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for October 21, 2020.

More than half of U.S. states are reporting a rise in COVID-19 cases. Arizona is one of them. Your efforts to keep distance from others, mask up, and stay home when you’re sick are critical to limiting the spread of both COVID-19 and influenza.

THERE’S A COVID-19 OUTBREAK AT MY CHILD’S SCHOOL. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Should an outbreak of COVID-19 occur in a school, Public Health will conduct case investigations and assist the school with contact tracing efforts to identify and notify any students or staff who are determined to be close contacts. Public Health also will work with the school to provide appropriate disease prevention and control guidance.
Similar to determining when to reopen schools for in-person learning, the decision of when to quarantine a group of students or when to close a portion or all of the school should be made in close coordination with Public Health. This may take into account a number of factors including but not limited to:
- the level of community transmission
- whether cases have been identified among students and staff
- if cases are identified, how many classrooms are affected
- percent absenteeism in the school
- student population being affected (i.e., age of students, classrooms affected, etc.)
- the model of instruction delivery and mitigation plans in place
- the importance of in-person education to the social, emotional, and academic growth and well-being of the student population
STAY HOME WHEN YOU’RE SICK
Feeling sick? It’s not always easy to tell whether it’s the cold, the flu, COVID-19, or something else. The most important thing to know is, whatever you have, you should stay home and stay away from others as much as possible. This is not the time to try to tough it out.
ISOLATION HOUSING
Do you need a place to stay isolated from others in your household because of a COVID-19 diagnosis? Tell the Public Health investigator who contacts you about your positive test and they can connect you with resources including:
- Free isolation housing, up to 10 days from start of symptoms
- Transportation to and from the location and medical appointments
- Prepared meals
In order to qualify, you must be able to care for yourself because there is no on-site medical assistance.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP
Maricopa County is offering assistance programs to help you take care of your health and your financial responsibilities. We have free flu shot events; free COVID-19 testing; financial assistance for people struggling to pay their rent or utility costs; financial assistance for people struggling with funeral or burial costs; and support for businesses and nonprofits with grants to cover financial losses incurred during the pandemic. Elections and Recorder’s Office
Ballot counting is underway in Maricopa County. Thanks to a 2019 law that allows ballot counting two weeks prior to Election Day and upgraded tabulation equipment, Maricopa County will be able to count more early ballots, and do it faster than in previous elections. If you’re planning to vote early, find a secure drop box or a Vote Center to cast your ballot in person at Locations.Maricopa.Vote.

Sus esfuerzos para mantener el distancimiento social, uso de la mascarilla y el quedarse en casa cuando esta enfermo es crucial para evitar la propagación de ambos COVID-19 y la gripe.

SI EXISTE UN BROTE DE COVID-19 EN LA ESCUELA DE MI HIJO, ¿LA CERRARÁN?
Si ocurriera un brote de COVID-19 en una escuela, Salud Pública le dará seguimiento y asistirá a las escuelas para identificar y notificar a los estudiantes y maestros que han estado en contacto cercano con la persona infectada. Salud Pública también trabajará con la escuela para dar guía de control y prevención de la enfermedad.
Así como se determina cuando reabrir las escuelas para clases en persona, la decisión de cuando poner en cuarentena a un grupo de estudiantes o cuando cerrar una porción o toda la escuela se debe hacer en coordinación cercana con Salud Pública. Para esto se tomará en cuenta un número de factores incluyendo, pero no está limitado a lo siguiente:
- el nivel de transmisión comunitario
- si existen casos entre estudiantes y personal docente
- si se identifican casos, cuantas clases están siendo afectadas
- porcentaje de estudiantes o personal docente ausente en la escuela
- población estudiantil que esta siendo afectada (ejemplo; edad de los estudiantes, salón afectado, etc.)
- el modelo de instrucción que está siendo utilizado por la escuela y el plan de mitigación que tengan
- la importancia de la educación en persona para la salud emocional, social y crecimiento académico y bienestar de la población estudiantil
QUÉDESE EN CASA CUANDO ESTE ENFERMO
¿Se siente enfermo? No siempre es fácil saber si es un resfriado, gripe o COVID-19, o algo más.
Lo más importante es que sea lo que sea que usted tenga, debe quedarse en casa y alejado de otros lo mas que pueda. No es tiempo de ignorar los síntomas.

VIVIENDA PARA AISLARSE
¿Necesita un lugar donde pueda aislarse de otros después de haber sido diagnosticado con COVID-19? Dígale al personal de Salud Pública que les dará seguimiento a los casos positivos y ellos le conectaran con recursos como:
- Vivienda para aislarse hasta por 10 días desde que iniciaron los síntomas
- Transportación de y al lugar de aislamiento y citas médicas
- Comidas preparadas
Para calificar, debe poder cuidarse usted mismo porque no hay personal médico que le asista.
PONGASE LA VACUNA DE LA GRIPE
Cuídese usted, los niños y personas de la tercera edad y además a los trabajadores de la salud que están luchando contra la pandemia. Haga planes y obtenga su vacuna contra la gripe GRATIS en maricopa.gov/gripe. Arremánguese y vacúnese contra la gripe.

Elecciones y Oficina de Registro
El conteo de boletas está en marcha en el Condado Maricopa. Gracias a una ley del 2019 que permite el conteo de boletas dos semanas antes del Día de la Elección y un mejor equipo de tabulación, el Condado Maricopa podrá contar más boletas tempranas y hacerlo más rápido que en elecciones anteriores. Si está planeando votar temprano, encuentre un buzón electoral seguro o un Centro de Votación para emitir su boleta en persona en Ubicaciones.Maricopa.Voto.
