TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: MORE AREAS IN THE RED AS COVID-19 CASES INCREASE

WHEN SCHOOLS SHOULD CONSIDER VIRTUAL LEARNING

If community spread begins to increase to a higher level, schools should proactively begin discussions about a potential need to return to a more physically-distanced learning scenario.

• If a school district or other defined school area (e.g., charters) has one or more benchmarks in the “Substantial (Red)” category for two or more weeks, schools should consult with Maricopa County Department of Public Health to determine whether to prepare to transition back to virtual learning with onsite support services.
• If a school district or other defined school area (e.g., charters) has ALL three benchmarks in the “Substantial (Red)” category for two or more weeks, schools should prepare to transition to virtual learning with onsite support services and consult with Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

As a reminder, Public Health makes recommendations to school decision-makers with the goal of providing safe ways for in-person learning to continue; the decision about whether to close schools or classrooms, or adjust learning scenarios, is made by school leaders.

UPDATE ON STATE BENCHMARK DATA

Arizona Department of Health Services has identified three benchmarks to monitor the spread of COVID-19 in our community. We are seeing increases in all three benchmarks:

• Case rates (cases per 100,000 people): For the most recent week of full data (10/18), Maricopa County had 115 cases per 100,000. This is considered substantial spread. For context, the previous week’s rate was 87 cases per 100,000 people.
• Percent positivity: For the most recent week of full data (10/18), Maricopa County, as a whole, has seen 6.4% of COVID-19 tests come back positive. Between 5 and 10% is considered moderate spread. The previous week’s rate was 5.5%.
• COVID-like illness as a percentage of hospital visits: For the most recent week of full data, 3.3% of hospital visits in Maricopa County were for COVID-like illness. Below 5% is considered minimal spread. The previous week’s rate was 3.0%.

LARGE GATHERINGS

We are entering a time of the year when families and friends frequently gather in large groups. From the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Public Health recommended keeping gatherings to fewer than 10 people to limit the risk of getting or spreading the virus. With the holidays approaching, this may feel like tough guidance to follow, but it’s extremely important for everyone’s protection.

If you are planning gatherings, you can reduce risk to yourself and your guests if you:

• limit the size of the gathering to 10 people or fewer;
• spend time outdoors instead of indoors;
• keep distance between yourself and others not in your household;
• do not share food or drinks — everyone brings their own;
• provide masks and hand sanitizer;
• follow mask regulations or other local mitigation measures;
• limit contact with people at risk of higher illness;
• and, of course, stay home and away from others if you’re sick.

Planning a trip for the holidays? Remember: travel increases your chances of getting infected and spreading COVID-19. If your plans do involve travel, take a look at these FAQ’s from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In addition, consider isolating from others prior to your travel and getting a COVID-19 test before you leave and after you return.

CUANDO LAS ESCUELAS DEBEN CONSIDERAR EL APRENDIZAJE VIRTUAL

Si los niveles de propagación siguen subiendo, las escuelas deben hablar sobre la posibilidad de regresar a un escenario de aprendizaje a la distancia.

ACTUALIZACIONES A LOS PARÁMETROS DE DATOS ESTATALES

El Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona ha identificado tres parámetros para monitorear COVID-19 en nuestra comunidad. Estamos viendo un incremento en las tres ramas o parámetros:

• Índice de casos (casos por 100,000 personas): Los datos completos recientes (18 de oct.) en el Condado Maricopa tuvo 115 casos por 100,000 personas. Esto se considera propagación sustancial. Para ponerlo en contexto, la semana previa el índice fue de 87 por cada 100,000.

• Porcentaje de visitas a hospitales por enfermedad de COVID-19. El índice de propagación de la semana previa fue de 3.0%.

REUNIONES GRANDES

Estamos entrando a un tiempo del año cuando las familias y amigos frecuentemente se reúnen en grupos grandes. Desde principios de COVID-19, Salud Pública ha recomendado mantener las reuniones de menos de 10 personas para limitar el riesgo de contagio o propagar el virus. • Limite el contacto con personas de alto riesgo
• Y quédese en casa alejado de otros si está enfermo

Además, considere aislarse de otros antes de salir de viaje y hacerse una prueba de COVID-19 antes de salir y al regresar de viaje.
