The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for October 20, 2020.

Maricopa County is trying to better understand your motivation for choosing whether or not to get tested for COVID-19. We would appreciate your response to this short survey so that we may better serve the community with COVID-19 testing. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.
FREE COVID-19 TESTING AVAILABLE
If you suspect or know you were exposed to the virus, take a look at the symptom checker from the CDC to determine your risk level and need for testing. Maricopa County offers free COVID-19 testing events for anyone in the community, or you can search a list of ADHS testing sites.

MY CHILD IS IN QUARANTINE AFTER BEING EXPOSED TO COVID-19. SHOULD THEY GET TESTED?
With or without symptoms, getting testing after being exposed to someone with COVID-19 could help reduce further spread of the virus. If you’re notified your child was identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19, consider having them tested. You can use one of the free community testing sites listed above, or ask your school nurse or administrator about a free testing option Public Health has made available for students and staff who were exposed at school.
Be sure to report positive test results to your school nurse so that they can follow-up with you and provide additional guidance. Testing labs will report positive test results to Public Health.
MY CHILD TESTED NEGATIVE FOR COVID-19. DO THEY STILL NEED TO QUARANTINE?
If your child was exposed to a student infected with COVID-19, it is important to follow the recommended quarantine of 14 days, regardless of negative test results. That’s because people can develop the infection for up to 14 days after the exposure. Even if your child tests negative after a week, they can still develop the disease and infect others, with or without symptoms.
HOW TO TAKE OFF A MASK
Masks are an effective way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, it’s important to wear and care for them properly. That includes washing your mask after every use and taking care not to touch any germs from your mask. Here’s the proper way to take off a mask:
- Unhook the mask by the mask strings
- Handle only by the ear loops or ties
- Fold outside corners together
- Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth
- Wash your hands immediately after removing
TAKE CONTROL, TAKE CARE
Maricopa County is putting federal CARES Act funds to good use by offering a number of assistance programs to help residents with their physical and financial health. These programs remove the financial barriers to getting a COVID-19 test or flu vaccination, provide financial assistance to people struggling to pay their rent or utility costs, and support businesses and nonprofits with grants to cover financial losses incurred during the pandemic. MI HIJO ESTA EN CUARENTENA DESPÚES DE HABER ESTADO EXPUESTO A COVID-19 ¿DEBERĺA HACERSE LA PRUEBA?
Con o sin síntomas, después de haber estado expuesto a alguien con COVID-19 el hacerse la prueba pudiera ayudar a reducir la propagación del virus. Si a usted se le notificó que su hijo ha estado en contacto con alguien de COVID-19, considere hacerle la prueba. Usted puede usar uno de los sitios de pruebas comunitarios gratuitos que se mencionaron antes o pregúntele a la escuela sobre las opciones de pruebas que Salud Pública tiene disponibles para estudiantes y personal docente que estuvieron expuestos en la escuela.
Asegúrese de reportar a la escuela si la prueba salió positiva para que se le dé seguimiento y le brinden guía adicional. Los laboratorios reportarán los resultados a Salud Pública.
MI HIJO DIO NEGATIVO A LA PRUEBA DE COVID-19. ¿AUN ASI TIENE QUE QUEDARSE EN CUARENTENA?
Si su hijo ha estado expuesto a otro estudiante infectado con COVID-19, es importante seguir los 14 días de la cuarentena, sin importar si los resultados dieron negativos. Eso es porque se pudiera desarrollar la infección hasta los 14 días después de haber estado expuesto. Aun si usted dio negativo después de una semana, todavía se pueden desarrollar e infectar a otros, con o sin síntomas.
COMO QUITARSE LA MASCARILLA
Las mascarillas son una forma efectiva de prevenir la propagación de COVID-19. Sin embargo, es importante usar y cuidar la mascarilla adecuadamente. Eso incluye lavar la mascarilla después de cada uso y no tocar ningún germen de su mascarilla. Así que considere estos pasos para quitarse la mascarilla:
1. Quítesela solo por los cordones de la mascarilla
2. Solo toque los cordones atrás de las orejas
3. Dóblela de los cordones uniéndolos juntos cuando se la quite
4. No se toque los ojos, nariz o boca
5. Lávese las manos inmediatamente después de usarla
El CONDADO MARICOPA TE CUIDA
El Condado Maricopa está utilizando fondos federales de CARES Act al ofrecer un gran número de programas de asistencia para ayudar a los residentes a mantener la salud física y financiera. Estos programas ayudan a que no exista la barrera financiera para los que decidan hacerse la prueba de COVID-19 y vacunación contra la gripe, proveer asistencia financiera para las personas que no pueden pagar la renta o gastos de servicios públicos y apoyo a los negocios y agencias no lucrativas con subsidios para que cubran perdidas financieras por la pandemia.
