The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for September 28, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: MORE FREE ANTIBODY TESTING TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY!
Maricopa County field teams will be offering free COVID-19 antibody testing to eligible households in four ZIP codes tomorrow and Wednesday. The ZIP codes are 85304, 85022, and 85027.
This round of testing is part of a serosurvey that will help Public Health understand how many people in our community may have some immunity to COVID-19. This will help us understand when and how we could reach community immunity and relax mitigation strategies. Participants will be able to get free COVID-19 antibody testing for their household and will receive a phone call with their results.
If you have received a door hanger about the serosurvey, your household is eligible. Please consider participating when volunteers knock on your door.
HOW CAN WIDESPREAD ANTIBODY TESTING HELP US LEARN MORE ABOUT COVID-19?
We know that, especially early on in the pandemic, not everyone who was infected was tested. We also know that around 40% of people infected with COVID-19 never develop symptoms and may not be included in our case counts. By testing a small number of households in targeted communities for antibodies (a “serosurvey”), we can get a better estimate of how many people throughout our county have been infected with COVID-19 at some point.
The communities being surveyed were picked intentionally, in partnership with the CDC, to provide a sample that represents all of Maricopa County. Getting enough people from every selected community helps us estimate what is happening in our county as a whole.
OPTIONS TO GET YOUR FLU SHOT SCHEDULED
Getting a flu shot is more important than ever this year, and for the best protection, you’ll want to get your vaccine before the end of October.

Public Health also offers free flu shots for anyone 6 months through 18 years of age at three childhood immunization clinics around Maricopa County. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment.
DON’T FORGET OUR HEALTH CARE WORKERS
Our health care workers have given their all during the pandemic. Let’s help them out by doing what we can to keep COVID-19 and flu numbers as low as possible.
In addition to getting your flu shot, you can continue with the preventive measures that have helped bring our COVID-19 numbers down: stay home when you’re sick and whenever possible; keep six feet of distance from others; wear masks; avoid large groups; and practice good hygiene.

Maricopa County Public Health tracks and shares a lot of data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, but you may have questions about where to find some of that information. Here are three useful tools:

The Arizona Department of Health Services provides some data that the County does not track. The ADHS data dashboard has real-time data about testing and hospital bed use, in addition to data for the rest of the state. Their school and business dashboards break down data by county and can tell you which counties are meeting statewide benchmarks.
OUR EXPOSED CHILD TESTED NEGATIVE FOR COVID-19; CAN THEY GO BACK TO SCHOOL EVEN IF THEY DID NOT COMPLETE THE 14-DAY QUARANTINE?
If your child was exposed to a student infected with COVID-19, it is important to follow the recommended quarantine of 14 days, regardless of negative test results. That’s because you can develop the infection for 14 days after the exposure. Even if you test negative after a week, you can still develop the disease and infect others, with or without symptoms.

The voter registration deadline is October 5. Ballots will be mailed on October 7. In-person voting will be available October 7 through November 3.

El Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona brinda información que el condado no le da. El tablero de ADHS tiene datos en tiempo real sobre las pruebas y uso de camas en los hospitales, además de datos del resto del estado. ¿NUESTRO HIJO QUE ESTUVO EXPUESTO DIO NEGATIVO A COVID-19; PUEDEN REGRESAR A LAS AULAS AUN SI NO TIENE LOS 14 DĺAS DE CUARENTENA?
Si su hijo estuvo expuesto a un estudiante infectado con COVID-19, es importante que siga las recomendaciones de 14 días de cuarentena, independientemente si el resultado de la prueba fue negativo. Eso es porque pudiera desarrollar la infección hasta 14 días después de haber estado expuesto. Aun si la prueba dio negativo una semana después, todavía pudiera desarrollar la enfermedad e infectar a otros, con o sin síntomas.
