Maricopa County COVID-19 Update

The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for December 30, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: COVID-19 VACCINE DISPENSING RAMPS UP
The teams at all five COVID-19 vaccination Point of Dispensing (POD) sites have seen a significant uptick in scheduled appointments this week and are operating at full capacity. Frontline EMS and healthcare workers are in Phase 1A because they face a high risk of exposure or provide care for the sickest patients with COVID-19.
The Southeast Valley POD vaccinated more than 3,000 people Tuesday averaging about 450 per hour. So far, 36,121 frontline healthcare workers have been vaccinated and another 30,000 pre-screened individuals are scheduled or in the queue for an appointment. Also, this week the national program to vaccinate residents in long-term care facilities is underway.
VACCINE INFORMATION
Maricopa County has received 133,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine being used for Phase 1A. EMS and frontline healthcare workers are eligible, so if you are a nurse, doctor, environmental services worker, pharmacist, respiratory therapist, home health worker, or any other person who has exposure to COVID-19 (direct or indirect) through your work in the healthcare field, you can complete the pre-screening survey to sign up for a vaccine appointment now at Maricopa.gov/COVID19Vaccine1A.
Note: Some regional POD sites will pause operations after Dec. 31st before reopening for second doses of vaccine distribution. However, other sites will continue to schedule appointments for Phase 1A individuals who still need their first dose.
Public Health planners are working with state and local partners to get ready for Phase 1B vaccine distribution, which will include law enforcement/protective services occupations, education and childcare workers, people age 75 and older, and essential services/critical industry workers. Many health care workers have spent their holidays working to save lives. These are our health care heroes and now, more than ever, they need us to do our part to preserve precious health care resources. HOW TO CELEBRATE SAFELY
Most of us are excited to say goodbye to 2020. But remember, we are still in the middle of a pandemic. The safest way to celebrate the start of 2021 is to celebrate at home with people who live with you.
Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.

Want to get tested before returning to work, school, or other daily activities? You have options. Free community testing is still widely available. Test options include nasal swabs and saliva-based options. In some cases, rapid tests are available. Here are a few resources:

WHEN SHOULD I GET TESTED?
If you have COVID-like symptoms, you should get tested right away. If you aren’t experiencing symptoms, testing is recommended at least 5 full days after exposure. You can develop symptoms up to 14 days after close contact with an infectious person. Even if you test negative after a week, you can still develop the disease and infect others, with or without symptoms.
FLU PROTECTION: GIVE IT A SHOT
We have a shot to ease the burden on our healthcare system and keep people out of the hospital this flu season, but it’s going to take a community-wide commitment. Now is a great time to get vaccinated for influenza, especially if you are planning any holiday gatherings. You can find a list of free flu vaccine events, plus FAQ’s, at Maricopa.gov/flu.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: SIGUE LA VACUNACIÓN CONTRA COVID-19
Los equipos de vacunación en los Puntos de Distribución (PODs) siguen trabajando arduamente esta semana y operando a maxima capacidad. Los trabajadores de cuidado de la salud estan en la Fase 1 A porque son los que estan en las trincheras combatiendo el virus y tratando a pacientes más enfermos por lo que estan en mayor riesgo de enfermarse.
El Punto de Distribución del Sureste del valle vacunó a más de 3,000 personas el martes haciendo un promedio de 450 por hora. 36,121 de los trabajadores de la salud han sido vacunados y otros 30,000 estan programadados para recibir la vacuna. También esta semana arrancó el programa nacional de vacunación para residentes de las instalaciones de cuidado de largo plazo.

PRUEBAS DE COVID-19 ESTAN A SU ALCANCE
¿Se quiere hacer una prueba antes de regresar a trabajar, a la escuela o a otra actividad? Tiene algunas opciones en eventos gratuitos en la comunidad. Las opciones incluyen pruebas nasales, de saliva y en algunos casos pruebas rápidas. Aquí algunas opciones.

¿CUÁNDO ME DEBERĺA HACER LA PRUEBA?
Si usted tiene síntomas, debe hacerse la prueba rápidamente. Si no tiene síntomas, se recomienda la prueba en cualquier momento entre el 5 y 14 día de haber estado expuesto. Usted puede desarrollar síntomas hasta el día 14 después de haber estado expuesto a una persona infectada. Aun si usted da negativo después de una semana, usted puede desarrollar la enfermedad e infectar a otros con o sin síntomas.
