The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for October 16, 2020.
LATEST INFORMATION
- 435 cases reported yesterday; 148,399 cases since January. 9% hospitalized; 1% ICU. View demographic breakdown.

- Flu vaccine available. Get free flu shots, no insurance needed. View events.
TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: SLOW THE SPREAD
COVID-19 cases are increasing in much of the country as kids return to school and more people return to offices. In Maricopa County, we’ve seen a slight uptick in cases, but are still below 500 cases per day on average. Public Health urges everyone to commit to the preventive measures that have lowered our numbers in recent months. That means:
- Stay home when you’re sick and whenever possible
- Keep six feet of distance from others
- Wear masks in public
- Avoid large groups
- Practice good hygiene

Maricopa County is trying to better understand your motivation for choosing whether or not to get tested for COVID-19. We would appreciate your response to this short survey so that we may better serve the community with COVID-19 testing. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.

FLU FACTS
Do you know your flu facts? Here are a few to share with your friends and family as you consider the best way to protect your health this fall and winter:
During the 2018–2019 flu season, vaccination prevented an estimated:
- 4.4 million flu illnesses
- 58,000 flu hospitalizations
- 3,500 flu deaths
A 2018 study showed that from 2012 to 2015, flu vaccination among adults reduced the risk of being admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with flu by 82%.
During seasons when the flu vaccine viruses are similar to circulating flu viruses, flu vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of having to go to the doctor with flu by 40–60%.

Since the very first case of COVID-19, Maricopa County has prioritized sharing information and resources to keep the community informed. This effort includes 30 press conferences streamed live and posted online for the public; more than 140 informational newsletters; regular posts to county social media platforms; and a consistently updated website, Maricopa.gov/COVID19. On the website, you will find data and guidance for individuals, families, businesses, schools, municipalities, and more. More than 300,000 ballots have been signature verified and are ready to be counted beginning October 20! If you’re planning to vote early, find a secure drop box or a Vote Center to cast your ballot in person at Locations.Maricopa.Vote. MENSAJE DEL DĺA: DISMINUYA LA PROPAGACIÓN
Los casos de COVID-19 están incrementando en muchas partes del país a como los niños regresan a clases y más personas regresan a las oficinas. En el Condado Maricopa, hemos visto un ascenso en casos pero aun seguimos por debajo de 500 por día en promedio. Salud Pública le pide a todos tomar medidas de prevención para disminuir el número de casos en los meses recientes. Eso significa:
