TODAY’S KEY QUESTION: ARE WE PAST THE PEAK?
Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine explains preventive measures are still needed even through COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are declining in Maricopa County.
ALL ABOUT ANTIBODY TESTS
Antibody tests check a sample of a person’s blood to look for antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19. These antibodies are produced when someone has been infected, so a positive result from this test may indicate that the person was previously infected with the virus.
- It typically takes 1–3 weeks after infection to develop antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19.
- This means an antibody test won’t necessarily tell you if you have a current infection. A viral test (PCR) should be taken to diagnose a current infection.
- We do not know yet if antibodies protect a person from getting COVID-19 again.
- Antibody tests are not as accurate as diagnostic tests and sometimes include “false positives.”
WHY MARICOPA COUNTY FUNDS DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
Maricopa County has partnered with Valle del Sol to provide diagnostic PCR testing in communities across Maricopa County. These events, funded through the CARES Act, are intended to add testing locations and options to those already available through the State of Arizona and some cities.
Diagnostic testing is one way we can understand trends in how the virus is spreading in our community. So why fund PCR tests instead of antibody tests?
Disease investigation and contact tracing are most effective when Public Health is quickly notified about an active infection. That way, staff can reach out to a person while they’re still contagious to limit their contact with others. This also allows Public Health to alert a COVID-positive person’s close contacts so they can watch for symptoms during the timeframe they may become ill and take steps to protect themselves and others.
Antibody tests do not provide Public Health data about active infections, making those tests less effective in managing disease spread.
DO NOT DELAY DOCTOR VISITS
With all the talk about COVID-19 and health care capacity, you may have put off your annual check-up or maybe you decided not to seek treatment for a medical condition or new health issue. If that describes you, don’t delay any longer. Many doctors and health clinics have virtual appointments available. You can often talk to your doctor online, by phone, or through email, and then follow up in person if necessary. As always, if you need emergency medical care, seek it immediately. Emergency rooms are safe.

TODO SOBRE LAS PRUEBAS DE ANTICUERPOS
Las pruebas de anticuerpos toman una prueba de la sangre de una persona para ver si tiene los anticuerpos del virus que causa el COVID-19. Estos anticuerpos se producen cuando alguien ha sido infectado, un resultado positivo de esta prueba podría indicar que la persona ha sido infectada previamente con este virus.
· Típicamente toma 1–3 semanas después de infección para desarrollar anticuerpos que causa el COVID-19
· Esto significa que una prueba anticuerpo no necesariamente revelara si tiene la infección actual. Una prueba viral llamada PCR debe ser la prueba que diagnostica si existe infección actual.
· Aún no sabemos si una prueba de anticuerpos proteje a una persona de volverse a infectar con COVID-19.
· Las pruebas anticuerpos no son tan certeras como las pruebas de diagnóstico y a veces pudieran dar “positivos falsos”
PORQUE EL CONDADO MARICOPA ESTÁ FINANCIANDO PRUEBAS DE DIAGNÓSTICO
El Condado Maricopa se ha unido a Valle del Sol para proveer las pruebas de diagnóstico (PCR) en comunidades del Condado Maricopa. Para estos eventos, se usan fondos de CARES Act, han sido diseñados para añadir más capacidad de pruebas de las que ya están programadas por el estado de Arizona y algunas ciudades. Las pruebas de diagnósticos ayudan a entender como el virus se propaga en la comunidad. Así que ¿por qué financiar las pruebas PCR en lugar de las pruebas anticuerpos?
El investigar enfermedades y el dar seguimiento son los métodos más efectivos cuando a Salud Pública se le notifica rápidamente sobre una infección activa. Así, el personal puede localizar a las personas mientras están contagiadas para limitar el contacto con otros. Esto permite que Salud Pública se comunique con personas que estuvieron en contacto cercano con una persona infectada y así estén pendientes de los síntomas o que pasos deben seguir para protegerse a sí mismos y a otros.
Las pruebas anticuerpos no proveen información a Salud Pública sobre infecciones actuales y son menos efectivas en el manejo de la propagación de enfermedades.

Con todo lo que se dice sobre COVID-19 y la capacidad de cuidado de salud, usted pudiera retrasar sus revisiones anuales o decidir no recibir tratamiento por alguna condición médica o nuevos problemas de salud. Si esto lo describe a usted, no lo retrase más. Muchos doctores y clínicas de salud tienen citas virtuales disponibles. Usted pudiera hablar con su doctor en línea, por teléfono, o por correo electrónico y darle seguimiento en persona si es necesario. Como siempre, si necesita cuidado médico de emergencia, búsquela inmediatamente. Las salas de emergencia son seguras.
