The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for July 30, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: MARICOPA COUNTY DOUBLES CARES ACT FUNDING ALLOCATED FOR TESTING
Maricopa County is investing more federal CARES Act dollars in partnerships that will provide testing to underserved populations. The Board of Supervisors voted to double the amount of money allocated toward testing services — both for COVID-19 and the upcoming flu season. The Board vote brings to $50 million the amount set aside for testing services. The Board also allocated additional money toward other key aspects of the county’s COVID-19 response.
WHAT IS PUBLIC HEALTH’S ROLE IN THE PANDEMIC?
Maricopa County Public Health does not make policy; instead, the department’s role is to investigate disease, gather pertinent public health data, and then use that data to make recommendations to the public and to decision makers.
MORE DEATHS ARE BEING REPORTED IN MARICOPA COUNTY IN 2020. IS THIS ENTIRELY DUE TO COVID-19?
The increase in overall deaths is likely related to COVID-19, but it’s too early to know what other factors may be involved. And while deaths linked directly to COVID-19 are nearing 2,000 in our County, there could be indirect deaths due to COVID-19 as well.
LONG-TERM CARE TRENDS
Maricopa County Public Health works with long-term care facilities to prevent outbreaks. Early in the pandemic, the majority of COVID-19 cases and deaths were occurring in these facilities. However, that trend has changed, thanks largely to nursing homes, hospice, and other long-term care settings implementing strict protocols to slow the spread.
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING
Do you know the signs of heat illness? With an excessive heat warning in effect from now through Saturday, please limit your time outdoors, drink plenty of water, and know when your body is showing signs of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or other issues.
WEATHER RELIEF FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS
The Maricopa County Human Services Department and its partners have worked together to find shelter options for homeless individuals during our intense summer heat. Nearly 70 individuals spent last night at the County’s downtown heat relief location.

COUNTY AGENCIES AT WORK
ELECTIONS AND RECORDER’S OFFICE
Election Day is just a few days away! There are 80 Vote Centers open now across Maricopa County with safety measures in place, and nearly 100 Vote Centers will be open on Election Day. You can vote in person from now through August 4. If you have an early ballot, and did not mail it back by July 29, the Elections Department advises you to drop it off at a Vote Center or a secure Elections drop box to make sure it’s counted.
HUMAN SERVICES
Maricopa County is offering assistance to families and individuals to help them stay in their homes. Maricopa County’s eviction protection program offers residents of Maricopa County (outside of the cities of Phoenix and Mesa) up to three months of rent paid plus the possibility of utility assistance.

Have you completed your 2020 Census? There’s still time, if not. An accurate census means Maricopa County will gets its fair share of federal dollars to invest in things like public health, infrastructure, and schools. We want everyone to count so we all benefit!

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: EL CONDADO MARICOPA INCREMENTA LOS FONDOS DE CARES ACT PARA PRUEBAS
El Condado Maricopa invierte más fondos federales de CARES Act en agencias que proveerán más pruebas en poblaciones vulnerables o que no tienen suficientes recursos. La Junta de Supervisores voto para doblar la cantidad que se designa para los servicios de pruebas tanto de COVID-19 como para la temporada de gripe que se avecina. El voto de la Junta aprobó $50 millones de dólares para servicios de pruebas. La Junta también designo más dinero para otros aspectos de respuesta a COVID-19.
¿CÚAL ES EL ROL DE SALUD PÚBLICA EN LA PANDEMIA?
Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa no enforza leyes, el departamento investiga enfermedades, obtiene datos pertinentes a la salud pública, y usa esos datos para hacer recomendaciones al público y a quienes tienen el poder de tomar decisiones.
MÁS MUERTES SE ESTÁN REPORTANDO EN EL CONDADO MARICOPA EN EL 2020. ¿ESTO SE ATRIBUYE A COVID-19?
El incremento de las muertes está relacionado a COVID-19 pero es muy pronto para saberlo. Y mientras se investiga si estas muertes están ligadas a COVID-19 en el condado ya se registran cerca de 2,000 y pudiera haber más muertes indirectas por COVID-19.
LOS CENTROS DE CUIDADO DE LARGO PLAZO
Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa trabaja con los centros de cuidado de largo plazo para prevenir brotes. Al principio de la pandemia, la mayoría de los casos de COVID-19 y las muertes ocurrían en estas instalaciones. Sin embargo, eso ha cambiado, gracias principalmente a que los asilos, hospicios y ambientes de cuidado de largo plazo han implementado protocolos más estrictos para reducir la propagación.
ADVERTENCIA DE CALOR EXTREMO
¿Conoce los signos de enfermedades por calor? Existe una advertencia de calor extremo desde hoy hasta el sábado, por favor límite su tiempo al aire libre, beba mucha agua, y reconozca cuándo su cuerpo está mostrando signos de golpe de calor, agotamiento por calor u otros problemas de salud.
ALIVIO DEL CALOR PARA LAS PERSONAS SIN HOGAR
El Departamento de Servicios Humanos del Condado de Maricopa y sus socios han trabajado juntos para encontrar opciones de refugio para personas sin hogar durante nuestro intenso calor veraniego. Casi 70 personas pasaron anoche en la ubicación de 1 W. Madison del condado.

ELECCIONES Y OFICINA DE REGISTRO
¡El Día de la Elección está a sólo unos días! Hay 80 Centros de Votación abiertos ahora en todo el Condado Maricopa con medidas de seguridad establecidas, y casi 100 Centros de Votación estarán abiertos el Día de la Elección. Usted puede votar en persona desde ahora hasta el 4 de agosto. Si tiene una boleta temprana y no la envió por correo para el 29 de julio, el Departamento de Elecciones le recomienda que la deje en un Centro de Votación o en un buzón electoral seguro de Elecciones para asegurarse de que si sea contada.

SERVICIOS HUMANOS
El Condado de Maricopa está ofreciendo asistencia a familias e individuos para que permanezcan en sus hogares. El programa de protección contra el desalojo del Condado de Maricopa ofrece a los residentes del Condado de Maricopa (fuera de las ciudades de Phoenix y Mesa) pagar hasta tres meses de alquiler más la posibilidad de asistencia de servicios públicos.
