Maricopa County COVID-19 Update

The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for June 12, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: RISING CASES AND HOSPITAL BED CAPACITY
WHAT THE DATA SHOWS
Public Health continues to see an increase in cases with nearly 1,000 reported over the past 24 hours. We expected a rise in cases with more people interacting in the community, but the rate at which cases are increasing is concerning.
It’s important for everyone to remember that this is a disease that anyone can get.
9% of cases are 19 years old or younger
47% of cases are people ages 20-44
29% of cases are people ages 45-64
15% of cases are people over the age of 65.
We know the risk of serious illness is greater for adults over 65 and those with chronic medical conditions, but anyone can spread the disease and a positive case typically spreads the virus to two to three others. That’s why each of us needs to take protective measures to help slow the spread.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
· WHEN POSSIBLE — Avoid being in any setting with more than 10 people
· ALWAYS — Keep at least six feet of distance from others when out in public
· WHEN POSSIBLE — Limit contact with those outside of our household, especially if you are in a high-risk group
· ALWAYS — Stay home when you are sick
· ALWAYS — Stay home as much as possible when a household member has tested positive for COVID-19 except to get essential medical care, prescriptions, and food
· FREQUENTLY — Wash hands with soap and water, and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if unable to wash hands
· ALWAYS — Wear a mask or cloth face covering when going out in public
THE RESEARCH BEHIND WEARING MASKS
There is mounting scientific evidence that wearing a well-fitting cloth face mask can protect both the person wearing the mask and those around the mask-wearer from COVID-19. Public Health has posted links to some of the research on this page.
TESTING
If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or believe you may have been exposed to the virus, you can get a test without going to see a doctor first. Visit the Arizona Department of Health Services website to see available testing locations.
CLOSE CONTACTS
If you are a close contact of someone infected with COVID-19, you will receive a phone call from Public Health. You’ll be provided information about how to monitor for symptoms of illness for 14 days and what protective measures you should take during that time to prevent potential exposure to others. To help answer questions about the contact tracing process, including how to verify the call is coming from Public Health, visit Maricopa.gov/CovidTracing.
CARES ACT FUNDING FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
Maricopa County is directing $23 million in CARES Act funding to small businesses. While the details are still being worked out, the plan approved by the Board will establish a grant program that would support small businesses and non-profit organizations that can demonstrate financial hardship because of COVID-19. Because the cities of Phoenix and Mesa also received significant CARES Act funding, businesses and non-profits in those cities would not be eligible to apply.

COUNTY AGENCIES AT WORK
Courts
New jury selection in Maricopa County will resume on Monday, June 15. Prospective jurors will have to follow some new rules including wearing protective masks.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: UN INCREMENTO EN LOS CASOS Y CAPACIDAD HOSPITALARIA
LO QUE LOS DATOS NOS MUESTRAN
Salud Pública continúa viendo un incremento de casos con cerca de 1,000 casos que se reportaron en las últimas 24 horas. Se esperaba un alza en el número de casos ya que más gente está interactuando entre sí pero al nivel que está subiendo los casos es de preocupación.
Por eso es importante que todos recuerden que esta enfermedad a cualquiera puede infectar.
9% de los casos son de personas 19 años o más jóvenes
47% de los casos son de personas de 20 a 44 años
29% son de personas de 45 a 64 años
15% son casos de personas mayores de 65 años
Sabemos el riesgo de esta enfermedad seria es mayor en los adultos de 65 años o más y para aquellos con condiciones crónicas, pero cualquier persona puede propagar la enfermedad y un caso positivo por lo regular contagia a dos o tres personas más. Por eso todos debemos tomar medida de prevención para reducir la propagación.
LO QUE USTED PUEDE HACER
· CUANDO SEA POSIBLE — Evite estar en reuniones de más de 10 personas
· SIEMPRE — Manténgase al menos seis pies de distancia de otros cuando este en público
· CUANDO SEA POSIBLE — limite el contacto con gente fuera de su hogar, especialmente si es una persona que está en el grupo de alto riesgo
· SIEMPRE — Quédese en casa cuando esté enfermo
· SIEMPRE — Quédese en casa lo más que pueda si es que un miembro de su familia ha dado positivo a COVID-19 excepto para lo esencial como cuidado médico, medicina, y comida
· FRECUENTEMENTE — Lávese las manos con agua y jabón, y use desinfectante para las manos cuando no se las pueda lavar
LA EVIDENCIA DETRAS DE LAS MASCARILLAS
Existe más y más evidencia que respalda que el uso de mascarillas bien colocadas y ajustada a la cara le puede proteger tanto al que la está usando como a los que están a su alrededor.
PRUEBAS
Si usted está experimentando síntomas de COVID-19 o cree que ha estado expuesto al virus, usted puede hacerse la prueba sin que tenga que visitar a su doctor primeramente. Visite el sitio del Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona para las localidades.
SI ESTUVO EN CONTACTO CERCANO
Si usted estuvo en contacto cercano a alguien que está infectado con COVID-19, usted recibirá una llamada de Salud Pública. Se le dará información sobre como monitorear los síntomas de la enfermedad por 14 días y las medidas de protección que debe tomar para prevenir exponer a otros. FONDOS FEDERALES DE CARES ACT PARA NEGOCIOS MINORISTAS
El Condado Maricopa está dirigiendo $23 millones de fondos de CARES Act para negocios pequeños. Mientras aún se están trabajando los detalles, el plan aprobado por la Junta de Supervisores establece el apoyo para negocios pequeños y organizaciones sin fines de lucro que puedan comprobar pérdidas o danos a sus negocios por COVID-19. Debido a que Phoenix y Mesa también recibieron fondos significativos de CARES Act, los negocios y agencias no lucrativas en estas ciudades no podrán solicitar.

La selección de nuevos jurados inicia este lunes 15 de junio. Las personas que sean llamadas para ser posibles jurados tendrán que seguir las nuevas reglas incluyendo usar las mascarillas protectoras.
