The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for October 9, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: UPCOMING EVENTS TO PROTECT YOUR HEALTH
Public Health is offering free flu vaccines from 10 am-2 pm tomorrow at Pilgrim Rest Church in Central Phoenix. There are 10 more special events next week, in addition to ongoing flu vaccine sites open on certain days throughout the fall and winter. You can find a location and time that work for you at Maricopa.gov/flu.
In addition, the County and its partners continue to offer free COVID-19 testing. With the recent slight increase in cases, now’s a good time to get tested. We have six events next week with the first one on Monday in Tolleson. Find all times and locations at Maricopa.gov/COVID19Testing.

FIND HELP PHOENIX
With the increased need for social support services during the pandemic, Public Health has revamped its Find Help Phoenix website to better help residents access free and almost-free services. These include:
- Housing and Utility Services
- Food and Clothing Services
- Employment Services
- Parenting and Childcare Services
- Kids and Youth Services
- Domestic Violence Victim Services
- Mental Health/Addiction Services
Information for the approximately 1,500 service providers is checked regularly for accuracy and includes: description of services offered, cost (if any), location, and a phone number and/or website link to contact the organization.

SCHOOL OUTBREAKS
There are currently 16 open COVID-19 outbreaks in K-12 schools. An outbreak is defined as two or more PCR-positive cases of COVID-19 among students or staff within a 14-day period which are “epi-linked” (i.e., could have reasonably come into contact with each other in school) and not from the same household. Schools are required to notify parents/guardians, students, and staff about the outbreak. Public Health investigates these cases and works directly with schools to provide disease prevention and control guidance

QUARANTINE GUIDELINES
If you are a household member or a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, Public Health advises you to stay at home and away from others for 14 days after the last time you had close contact with the sick person. We say 14 days because that’s the maximum amount of time it would take for COVID-19 symptoms to appear from the day a person is exposed to an infected person. If you do not have any symptoms after the 14-day period, you can leave quarantine.

MASK DO’S AND DON’TS
A growing body of research shows that a well-fitted cloth mask can also reduce the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19. To get the most out of your cloth mask:
- DO make sure the mask fits snugly against the side of your face.
- DO make sure the mask covers your nose.
- DO wash your mask after every use.
- DON’T touch the outside or inside of your mask during use. Put it on and take it off using the mask straps to avoid germs.
- DON’T wear a mask if you have trouble breathing or are unable to remove the mask without assistance.
COUNTY AGENCIES AT WORK
Elections and Recorder’s Office
Early voting is underway in Maricopa County! In-person Vote Centers opened this week and more than two million early ballots are on their way to voters. Our Elections Department and Recorder’s Office are serious about safety and security so you can be confident in your vote and your health. If you want to track your ballot (including when it’ll be delivered and when the Elections Department gets it back and counts your vote), you can text “Join” to 628–683 or visit BeBallotReady.Vote.
Library District
Maricopa County libraries are hoping to open with full operating hours next month. In the meantime, Pop-In Pickup. Curbside Pickup, Book-A-Librarian and online events remain available.

BROTES EN LAS ESCUELAS
Al momento hay 16 brotes activos de COVID-19 en las escuelas de K-12 grado. El brote se define como dos o más casos positivos de las pruebas llamadas PCR entre estudiantes y personal docente en un periodo de 14 días. (personas pudieron haber estado en contacto con cada una) y que no sean del mismo hogar. Las escuelas se les requiere notificar a los padre/tutores, estudiantes y personal sobre el brote. Salud Pública investiga estos casos y trabaja directamente con las escuelas para prevenir la enfermedad y ofrece una guía de control de enfermedades.

GUĺA DE CUARENTENA
Si usted es un miembro de un mismo hogar o ha estado en contacto con alguien infectado que dio positivo a COVID-19, Salud Pública le recomienda que se quede en casa y alejado con otros por 14 días desde su último contacto con una persona enferma.
Decimos 14 días porque ese es el tiempo máximo para que los síntomas de COVID-19 aparezcan desde el día que la persona estuvo expuesta a una persona infectada. Si usted no tiene síntomas después de 14 días, puede salir de la cuarentena.

LO QUE SI Y NO SE DEBE HACER CON LAS MASCARILLAS
Continúa creciendo las investigaciones que muestran que las mascarillas que queden bien a su cara reducen el riesgo de contraer o propagar COVID-19. Para usarla lo mejor posible usted debe saber lo siguiente:
- Asegúrese que las mascarillas queden bien a su cara en ambos lados del rostro.
- Asegúrese que la mascarilla cubra su nariz.
- Asegúrese de lavar la mascarilla después de cada uso.
- No se toque la mascarilla por dentro o por fuera mientras las este usando. Póngasela y quítasela usando los cordones para evitar los gérmenes.
- NO use una mascarilla si tienen problemas para respirar o no se la puede quitar por sí mismo.
