The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for September 17, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: POSITIVE TRENDS CONTINUE IN MARICOPA COUNTY
Maricopa County continues to see moderate spread of COVID-19 with declines in all three statewide benchmarks for the most recent week of complete data. Cases per 100,000 dropped from 52 during the week of August 23 to 43 during the week of August 30. The percentage of positive COVID-19 diagnostic tests dropped from 5.1% to 4.0%. The percentage of hospital visits for COVID-like illness also declined over that same period from 2.6% to 2.0%. Public Health will continue to monitor these trends and encourages everyone to be vigilant about wearing masks, keeping distance, and staying home when sick.

A NOTE FOR SCHOOLS
Last week we included guidance for when schools should consider pulling back on in-person instruction once they’ve re-opened. Starting this week, the pop-up report on our school data dashboard will now reflect this recommendation when a selected area has met the higher degree of community spread mark for 2 consecutive weeks.
A NOTE FOR BUSINESSES
The new data does not change anything for businesses that have been identified as being at higher risk for spreading COVID-19. With moderate spread, gyms, movie theaters, water parks, and bars and nightclubs that serve food can continue to operate under the guidelines outlined by Arizona Department of Health Services.
YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED AN OVERNIGHT JUMP IN CASE NUMBERS. HERE’S WHY.
Public Health received an unexpected increase in reported case numbers late on Wednesday. Upon further investigation, we have determined this was due to additional electronic lab reporting dating back to July. The cases come from multiple zip codes and age groups, so there will be some changes to historic data over this time period.
HELP US LEARN WHEN WE MIGHT REACH COMMUNITY IMMUNITY
We need your help. There are just a few days left in our serosurvey, a partnership between Maricopa County, ASU, and Mayo Clinic that provides free, voluntary COVID-19 antibody tests in 29 selected communities across Maricopa County. Field teams are out in these communities, knocking on doors and looking for about 100 more volunteers to get tested. Your information is kept private (see how seriously we take this here). By participating, you will help Public Health understand when and how we could reach community immunity and relax mitigation strategies like social distancing and mask wearing.

SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD BANKS
During the pandemic, more Arizonans are relying on food banks for meals. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors recognizes the important role these non-profit food banks play in our community. Yesterday, the Board allocated $3 million in CARES Act funding to provide support their efforts to feed more individuals and families. You can help, too, by volunteering at or donating to a food bank of your choice.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is providing additional support to individuals, families, and businesses struggling financially because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unified Command
With a decline in the number of deaths in Maricopa County over the past several weeks, Maricopa County Unified Command has suspended operations at a temporary morgue side set up over the summer to provide additional storage. The Office of Medical Examiner has sufficient capacity to handle those cases that fall within their jurisdiction.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: CONTINUAMOS EN LA DIRECCIÓN POSITIVA EN EL CONDADO MARICOPA
El Condado Maricopa continúa viendo propagación moderada de COVID-19 con descensos en los tres parámetros en las más recientes semanas. Los casos por cada 100,000 personas han bajado de 52 la semana del 23 de agosto a 43 durante la semana del 30 de agosto. El porcentaje de pruebas de diagnóstico positivo ha bajado de 5.1% a 4.0%. El porcentaje de visitas a hospitales por enfermedad parecida a COVID-19 ha bajado es ese mismo periodo de 2.6% a 2.0%. Salud Pública continuará monitoreando los cambios y anima a todos a que se mantengan vigilantes usando la mascarilla, manteniendo la distancia y quedándose en casa cuando estén enfermo.
UNA NOTA PARA LAS ESCUELAS
La semana pasada se incluyó guía para cuando las escuelas deben considerar si es que deciden detener la enseñanza en persona una vez que reabran. Empezando esta semana, el reporte en nuestro tablero para las escuelas reflejará esta recomendación cuando ciertas áreas tengan un alto nivel de propagación comunitario por dos semanas consecutivas.

UNA NOTA PARA LOS NEGOCIOS
Nuevos datos no cambian nada para los negocios que han sido identificados como de alto riesgo de propagación de COVID-19. Con propagación moderada, los gimnasios, cines, parques acuáticos, bares y club nocturnos que sirven comida continúan operando bajo ciertas guías del Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona.

Salud Pública ha recibido un incremento en casos reportados hasta este miércoles. Después de haber investigado, se ha determinado que se debe a que los laboratorios han reportado casos adicionales que datan de julio. Estos casos varían de código postal hasta la edad. Así que se espera que haya cambios en los datos anteriores o reportados en ese periodo.
AYUDENOS A ENTENDER SI HEMOS ALCANZADO INMUNIDAD EN LA COMUNIDAD

APOYE A SUS BANCOS DE COMIDA LOCALES
Durante la pandemia, mas Arizonenses están dependiendo de bancos de comida. La Junta de Supervisores del Condado Maricopa reconoce la importancia de estas agencias sin fines de lucro. Ayer la Junta aprobó $3 millones de fondos federales de CARES Act para brindar apoyo a familias e individuos. Usted también puede ayudar como voluntario o donando comida al banco de su preferencia.

La Junta de Supervisores del Condado Maricopa esta brindando apoyo adicional a personas, familias y negocios que están batallando financieramente por la pandemia de COVID-19.
Comando Unificado
Con un descenso en el número de muertes en el Condado Maricopa en las últimas semanas, el Comando Unificado del Condado Maricopa ha suspendido sus operaciones en una morgue temporal que era para mayor capacidad en el verano. La Oficina del Médico Forense tiene suficiente capacidad para los casos que lleguen en el otoño dentro de su jurisdicción.

No olvide llenar el censo. Es fácil, seguro e importante. Un conteo correcto, significa que Arizona obtendrá los fondos que necesita para la infraestructura, respuesta de emergencia, y servicios comunitarios. Hágalo ahora mismo.
