The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for September 23, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: FAQ’S FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Parents likely have a lot of questions as they help their kids navigate a different kind of school year.

• Does my child need to wear a mask at school?
• What happens if my child is exposed to an infected student?
• What kind of information will be released if there’s an outbreak at my child’s school?

NEED THE LATEST SCHOOL DATA?

Public Health is working closely with local schools to ensure they have the data they need to make informed decisions.

• School reopening dashboard: Search data about community spread by zip code or school district. Updated every Thursday morning.
• School outbreak data: Find out how many schools in Maricopa County have COVID19 outbreaks and the total count of students and staff with positive tests reported to Public Health. Updated every weekday morning.

*Note: To protect the privacy of students and staff, Public Health does not release the names of individual schools with outbreaks to a wide public audience. However, all parents/guardians of students as well as staff who are exposed or potentially exposed in an outbreak are notified directly by Public Health of their exposure and provided guidance on symptoms to watch for, how long to quarantine, and where to get tested.

LOOKING OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER

Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine and other staff in Maricopa County Unified Command who are responding to the COVID-19 emergency received their flu shots recently. Public Health recommends everyone over the age of two years old get a flu shot this year.

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and those around you by getting the flu shot.

FACT CHECK: COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FLU VACCINE

• Is it safe? The flu shot is safe and can help decrease your risk of severe influenza, hospitalization, and even death.
• Who can get the vaccine? People age six months and older are recommended to get the flu vaccine.
• Can it give me the flu? No, the flu vaccine cannot give you the flu.
• Why should I get the flu vaccine this year? The flu vaccine does a good job preventing hospitalizations and deaths from flu, which means fewer people going to the hospital, exposing healthcare workers, and potentially straining our healthcare system when both flu and COVID-19 are circulating.

SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Please take care of your mental health and check in with friends and loved ones. Some things that can help with managing stress and mental health concerns:

• Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate.
• Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
• Exercise regularly.
• Get enough sleep.

If you’re having trouble doing these or other parts of your daily life, do not be afraid to ask for help. The Central Arizona Crisis Line is available 24/7 at 602–222–9444 to talk with you. The Lifeline Chat is available if you’d prefer to chat over a voice call.

You can also call 2–1–1 for help with addressing other needs, such as food, clothing, or housing.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES Y RESPUESTAS PARA LOS PADRES Y CUIDADORES DE NIÑOS

Los padres de familia podrían tener muchas preguntas para saber cómo ayudar a sus hijos a navegar este año escolar tan diferente.

• ¿Mi hijo necesita usar una mascarilla para la escuela?
• ¿Qué pasa si mi hijo esta expuesto a un estudiante infectado?
• ¿Qué información se hará pública si se presenta un brote en la escuela de mi hijo?

NECESITA LOS ÚLTIMOS DATOS DE LAS ESCUELAS

Salud Pública está trabajando de cerca con escuelas locales para asegurar que tengan los datos que ellos necesitan para tomar decisiones informadas.

• Tablero de reapertura de escuelas: encuentre datos por código postal o distrito escolar. Actualizamos cada jueves por la mañana.
• Datos de brotes en las escuelas: Entérese cuantas escuelas en el Condado Maricopa tienen brotes de COVID-19 y cuantos estudiantes y personal han tenido pruebas positivas que se le ha notificado a Salud Pública. Actualizado cada mañana.

Nota: Para proteger la privacidad de los estudiantes y personal, Salud Pública no da a conocer los nombres de personas o nombres de escuelas al público en general. La Dra. Rebecca Sunenshine y otros miembros del personal del Comando Unificado del Condado Maricopa que están respondiendo en la emergencia de COVID-19 recientemente se vacunaron contra la gripe. Salud Pública recomienda que todos de dos años en adelante se pongan la vacuna este año.

Este año es más importante que nunca que se proteja usted y los que están a su alrededor poniéndose la vacuna contra la gripe.

CERCIÓRESE : PREGUNTAS COMUNES SOBRE LA VACUNA CONTRA LA GRIPE

• ¿Es segura? La vacuna contra la gripe es segura y puede ayudar a disminuir el riesgo de contraer la gripe seriamente, hospitalizaciones y aún la muerte.
• ¿Quién se puede poner la vacuna? Personas desde los seis meses se recomienda se la pongan.
• ¿Me puede dar la gripe? No. La vacuna no da la gripe.
• ¿Porqué me debo poner la vacuna contra la gripe este año? La vacuna puede prevenir que sea hospitalizado y hasta de morir. Además menos personas terminan hospitalizadas exponiendo a trabajadores de salud y evitando saturar el sistema hospitalario con la gripe y COVID-19.

MES DE PREVENCIÓN DEL SUICIDIO

Septiembre es el mes de Prevención del Suicidio. Por favor cuide su salud mental y revise a sus amigos y seres queridos. Todos estamos lidiando con estrés en nuestras vidas. No tenga miedo buscar ayuda.

Algunas cosas que puede hacer para manejar el stress y la salud mental:

• Inhale y exhale, haga estiramiento y medite
• Coma saludablemente
• Ejercite regularmente
• Duerma lo suficiente
