The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for October 7, 2020.

Getting a flu shot is a quick, proven preventive measure you can take right now to protect your health, the health of your loved ones, and the precious resources of our health care system in the middle of a pandemic. HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT SCHOOLS AND COVID-19?

Maricopa County Public Health plays an important role in helping schools reopen and operate safely. Here’s a quick review of our role:

• Reopening: Public Health provides the latest data and information about community spread so schools can make informed decisions. Data by school district or zip code can be found at Maricopa.gov/SchoolDashboard.
• Disease mitigation: Public Health provides best practices for schools to protect staff and students, regardless of their current learning scenario. Information can be found at Maricopa.gov/COVID19Schools.
• COVID-19 cases and outbreaks: Public Health investigates every case of COVID-19, and if a case is affiliated with a school (i.e., is a student, staff member, or teacher), we work directly with the school to notify them and provide guidance about next steps. Should an outbreak of COVID-19 occur in a school, Public Health will conduct case investigations and work with the school to identify and notify any students or staff who are determined to be close contacts. SCHOOL ASSISTANCE

Maricopa County Unified Command is getting critical resources to school districts as more of them bring students back to campus. Unified Command has obtained and distributed the following personal protective equipment to schools:

• 790,000 cloth masks + 10,689 reusable cloth face coverings
• 35,600 surgical masks
• 60,400 gloves
• 31,705 testing supplies
• 30,129 hand sanitizer containers
• 18,955 disinfectant containers

Unified Command has also distributed more than 1,300 PPE starter kits to school districts which included masks, face shields, gloves, and gowns).

All told, Maricopa County has distributed more than four million pieces of PPE during the pandemic.

FOOD BANK ASSISTANCE

Food insecurity is a huge issue in our community right now with people who’ve never before relied on assistance turning to local food banks for help. Making sure these organizations have the support and supplies they need is critical. That’s why the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors allocated $3 million in CARES Act funds to the non-profit Arizona Food Bank Network, which will distribute the money to large and small organizations that are meeting the needs of the community.

Funds will be used to buy refrigeration, freezer space, repair older equipment, staff, buy food, get to those who are shut in. Inquiries about agency qualifications or how to apply can be emailed to grants@azfoodbanks.org.

FUNERAL ASSISTANCE

With finances tight because of the pandemic, some grieving families find themselves unable to pay for the burial expenses of a loved one. To assist, Maricopa County and Valley of the Sun United Way are partnering to provide assistance for funeral costs. The program, funded with CARES Act dollars, will provide qualifying families up to $1,200 for burial or cremation expenses at a participating licensed Maricopa County funeral home. UPDATE ON COVID-19 IN COUNTY JAILS

As of Monday, October 5, there were no active COVID-19 cases in Maricopa County jails. During the entire pandemic, there have been a total of 1,671 positive cases in the county jail system with no deaths reported.

In-person voting for the November General Election began today, with safety measures in place. And if you signed up to receive your ballot in the mail, you won’t have to wait much longer! The Elections Department started mailing ballots today as well. Below are some resources to help you vote:

ASISTENCIA PARA LAS ESCUELAS

El Comando Unificado del Condado Maricopa esta ofreciendo recursos a los distritos escolares a como más estudiantes regresan a las aulas. El Comando Unificado ha obtenido y distribuido el equipo de protección personal a las escuelas:

El Comando Unificado ha distribuido más de 1,300 piezas de equipo de protección personal a distritos escolares. Estos kits incluyendo mascarillas, caretas, guantes y batas médicas.

Con todo esto dicho, el Condado Maricopa ha distribuido más de cuatro millones de piezas de equipo de protección personal durante la pandemia.

ASISTENCIA DE BANCOS DE COMIDA

Inseguridad de comida es un problema muy grande en nuestra comunidad en estos momentos ya que muchas personas que nunca habían dependido de alimentos de bancos de comida ahora requieren de la asistencia. Así que el tener todo el apoyo y herramientas para que sigan estos servicios es muy importante. Por eso la Junta de Supervisores del Condado Maricopa ha dado $3 millones de dólares de fondos de CARES Act para agencia no lucrativa, la Red de Bancos de Comida de Arizona que distribuirá el dinero a organizaciones grandes y pequeñas. Los fondos se usarán para la refrigeración, congeladores, reparación de equipo antiguo, personal y compra de comida para suplir la alta demanda. ASISTENCIA FUNARARIA

Con las finanzas muy apretadas en tiempos de pandemia, algunas familias que están de luto no pueden pagar por los servicios funerarios o de un ser querido. Para asistir, el Condado Maricopa y Valley of the Sun United Way se han asociado para proveer asistencia de costos de funerales. El programa, que usará fondos federales de CARES Act, proveerá asistencia a familias hasta de $1,200 para entierros y cremaciones en casas funerarias participantes del Condado Maricopa. ACTUALIZACIÓN DE COVID-19 EN LAS CARCELES DEL CONDADO

Hasta este lunes, 5 de octubre, no había un caso activo de COVID-19 en las cárceles del Condado Maricopa. Durante la pandemia, se han registrado un total de 1,671 casos positivos en sistema de carcelario del Condado, no se han reportado ninguna muerte.
