The future is made up of a million tiny decisions. This holiday season, make yours count.
HOLIDAY TRAVEL
Postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year. If you are considering travel, here are some questions that can help you decide what is best for you and your family:
- Are you, someone in your household, or someone you will be visiting at increased risk for getting very sick from COVID-19?
- Are cases high or increasing in your community or your destination? Check CDC’s COVID Data Tracker for the latest number of cases.
- Are hospitals in your community or your destination overwhelmed with patients who have COVID-19? To find out, check state and local public health department websites.
- Does your home or destination have requirements or restrictions for travelers? Check state and local requirements before you travel.
- During the 14 days before your travel, have you or those you are visiting had close contact with people they don’t live with?
- Do your plans include traveling by bus, train, or air which might make staying 6 feet apart difficult?
- Are you traveling with people who don’t live with you?
If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” you should consider making other plans, such as hosting a virtual gathering or delaying your travel.
HOLIDAY GATHERINGS
As cases continue to increase rapidly across the United States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with.
Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.
If you are hosting a gathering, please take as many precautions as you can to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
- Keep any gatherings small, wear masks, and stay at least 6 feet apart
- Consider having your gathering outdoors
COVID-19 TESTING THIS WEEK
Testing sites across the Valley are expecting a lot of people this week ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. You do have options.

If you have COVID-like symptoms, you should get tested right away. If you’ve been exposed to someone with the virus, but are not experiencing symptoms, testing is recommended any time between day 7 and day 14 after exposure. This can help you isolate sooner if you are positive, but your test may come back “negative” and you can still become positive in the rest of the 14-day period after exposure. This is because it takes time for the virus to reach detectable levels in the body.
Do not base your decisions this holiday week on the assumption that a negative test means there’s no way you’ll spread COVID-19.
COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE
Positive news continues to surface from developers of COVID-19 vaccines. It is possible we will have a vaccine approved for emergency use by the FDA this year (read about the measures taken to ensure vaccines are safe for the public). Public Health is working with the Arizona Department of Health Services as well as local hospital systems, medical associations, and others on a plan to distribute a potential vaccine. MEDICALLY CERTIFIED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Public Health’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is recruiting volunteers to assist with the administration of the new COVID-19 vaccine to our community and our community health partners. If you are medically certified to provide routine vaccinations (RN, MD, EMT, Paramedic, etc…) with a current license in good standing and would like to assist in this great community effort, please register to volunteer here: GetInvolvedMaricopa.org.

Free flu shots
Whether you have insurance or not, you can get a free flu shot. Find times and locations for all of our free flu vaccine events, at Maricopa.gov/flu.
Rental & utility assistance
Individuals and families impacted financially by COVID-19 can apply for rental or utility assistance in three easy steps:
- Check eligibility. For both programs, monthly income must be at or below 300% of the federal poverty level which is $6,550 for a family of four.
- Gather required documentation. For both programs, documentation is limited to speed along the process and includes a photo ID, proof of financial hardship due to COVID-19, and either a lease agreement or utility bill, depending on what you’re applying for.
- Apply for assistance. You can submit applications online or through your local Community Action Program (CAP) office.

Funeral assistance
With finances tight because of the pandemic, some grieving families find themselves unable to pay for the burial expenses of a loved one. To assist, Maricopa County and Valley of the Sun United Way are partnering to provide assistance for funeral costs.

- ¿Está usted o alguien en su hogar, o a quién va a visitar en alto riesgo de enfermarse gravemente por COVID-19?

- ¿Están los hospitales en su comunidad o destino a capacidad con pacientes que tienen COVID-19? Para saber visite los sitios de salud pública locales y estatales.

REUNIONES EN LOS DĺAS FESTIVOS
A como los casos continúan creciendo rápidamente en Estados Unidos la mejor manera celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias es en casa con gente con la que usted vive.
Las reuniones con la familia y sus amigos quienes no viven con usted pueden incrementar las posibilidades de infectarse o propagar COVID-19 y la gripe.
Si usted piensa tener invitados, haga lo más que pueda para prevenir la propagación de COVID-19:
- Mantenga su grupo de reunión pequeño, use mascarillas, y mantenga el distanciamiento de 6 pies
- Considere hacer su reunión al aire libre
PRUEBAS DE COVID-19 ESTA SEMANA
Los sitios de pruebas en el valle esperan a muchas personas esta semana antes del Dia de Acción de Gracias. Tiene algunas opciones.

Si usted tiene síntomas parecidos a COVID-19, debe hacerse la prueba inmediatamente. Si usted ha estado expuesto a alguien con el virus, pero no tiene síntomas, las pruebas se recomiendan en cualquier momento entre los días del 7 al 14 de haber estado expuesto. Esto le ayudará a aislarse lo más pronto posible si da positivo pero su prueba podría salir aun “negativa” y todavía resultar positivo hasta 14 días después del periodo de haber estado expuesto. Esto es porque toma tiempo para que el virus alcance niveles que sean detectables en el cuerpo.
NO base su decisión esta semana festiva en asumir que una prueba negativa significa que no esta propagando COVID-19.
ACTUALIZACIÓN DE LA VACUNA CONTRA COVID-19
Las noticias positivas continúan surgiendo de los creadores de vacunas contra COVID-19. Es posible que en unas cuantas semanas la vacuna sea aprobada por la Administración Federal de Drogas y Alimentos (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés). Salud Pública está trabajando con el Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona, así como también hospitales, asociaciones médicas y otros en el plan de distribución para cuando llegue la vacuna. SE NECESITAN VOLUNTARIOS CERTIFICADOS
La Reserva de Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa (MRC, por sus siglas en inglés) está reclutando voluntarios para asistir con la administración de la nueva vacuna contra COVID-19 en nuestra comunidad. Si usted cuenta con una certificación para administrar vacunas con licencia vigente (ejemplo: enfermera registrada, paramédico, equipos de emergencia, doctores) podría asistir en este gran esfuerzo comunitario, por favor regístrese en GetInvolvedMaricopa.org.

Vacunas contra la gripe
Con o sin seguro médico, usted puede vacunarse contra la gripe gratis. Encuentre sitios y horarios para eventos gratuitos en Maricopa.gov/gripe.
Asistencia de Renta o Servicios Públicos
Las personas impactadas financieramente por COVID-19 pueden solicitar asistencia de renta o servicios públicos en 3 pasos fáciles:
- Vea los requisitos. Para ambos programas, el ingreso mensual debe ser por 300% por debajo del nivel de pobreza que viene siendo $6,550 para una familia de cuatro.
- Tenga los documentos necesarios. Para ambos programas, la documentación que se pide es muy poca y eso permite que sea más rápido el proceso e incluye tener una identificación con foto, prueba de necesidad financiera por COVID-19, y muestra del contrato de renta o recibo de servicios públicos, dependiendo de lo que este solicitando.
- Solicite la asistencia. Someta su petición en línea o a través de la oficina del Programa de Acción Comunitaria (CAP, por sus siglas en inglés).

Asistencia Funeraria
Con las finanzas que estan muy apretadas durante esta pandemia, algunas familias que están de luto se encuentran sin dinero para poder pagar los gastos funerarios de sus seres queridos. Para asistirle, el Condado Maricopa y Valley of the Sun United Way se han asociado para brindarle asistencia con el costo funerario.
