The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for July 6, 2020.

YOUNG PEOPLE CAN GET REALLY SICK FROM COVID-19 TOO
While it’s still true that the risk of being admitted to a hospital, an intensive care unit, or dying of COVID-19 increases with age, it’s also true that a younger demographic of people across the United States are getting seriously ill from COVID-19 as well. A recent CDC study looking at underlying health conditions and risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 patients reported the median age for hospitalization was 48 years old, which may be younger than you’d expect.

DOES MARICOPA COUNTY’S MASK MANDATE APPLY TO ME IF I LIVE IN A CITY/TOWN WITHOUT MASK ORDINANCE?
The short answer is: yes. The regulations approved by the Board of Supervisors create minimum mask-wearing requirements everywhere in Maricopa County, including cities, towns, and unincorporated areas. Cities and towns may have more restrictive measures in place if they choose. You can read more about the county’s mandate here.

WHAT TO DO WITH MASKS AFTER YOU’RE DONE USING THEM
- Reusable cloth face coverings should be washed and machine dried after each use in way that does not damage or change the shape of the mask.
- Throw disposable masks in the trash after use. Please don’t litter.

WHAT STATEWIDE MEASURES ARE IN PLACE TO STOP COVID-19 SPREAD
Arizona surpassed 100,000 total COVID-19 cases today. Reported cases in Arizona have doubled in the past two weeks. These trends led Governor Ducey to ban large gatherings, pause operations at some businesses, and delay the start of in-person schooling to stem the spread of the virus.
DO YOU HAVE COVID-19 SYMPTOMS?
If you suspect you may have COVID-19, take a look at the symptom checker from the CDC and then determine your risk level. Contact your healthcare provider for testing, or see a list of testing sites here.
While most people who get COVID-19 recover at home with plenty of rest and fluids, here’s when you should seek medical attention.
*People of any age with certain underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 and should be especially vigilant.
HEAT SAFETY
It’s July in Maricopa County… and it’s going to feel like it this week. Temperatures near or above 110 degrees are expected for most of the week. Make sure you know the signs of heat illness, and take steps to keep yourself safe.

Today is the deadline to register to vote for Arizona’s August 4 primary election. Ballots start going out on Wednesday, and some in-person voting locations will open then as well.

Board of Supervisors
Maricopa County is providing relief to small businesses and non-profits impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic through a series of grants. The Small Business Relief Program will provide up to $10,000 in grants to reimburse businesses and non-profits (501(c)3) for lost revenues during March and April. The application period opens this week.

GENTE JOVEN Y SALUDABLE TAMBIÉN PUEDEN PADECER DE ENFERMEDAD SERIA DE COVID-19
Aunque es muy cierto que el riesgo de ser internado en un hospital, unidad de cuidado intensivo, o morir por COVID-19 incrementa con la edad, también es cierto que los jóvenes aunque estén saludables se están enfermando seriamente con COVID-19. Los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) reportan que la edad promedio de una persona hospitalizada es de 48 años de edad, que es más joven de lo que se había pensado originalmente.
¿ACASO EL REQUISITO DEL CONDADO MARICOPA APLICA A MI SI YO VIVO EN UNA CIUDAD O PUEBLO DONDE NO TIENEN UN REQUISITO DE MASCARILLA?
La respuesta es Sí, las regulaciones aprobadas por la Junta de Supervisores del Condado Maricopa requiere que al menos el uso de la mascarilla es necesario dentro del Condado Maricopa, incluyendo las ciudades, pueblos, o áreas que no se han incorporado que pertenece al condado. Las ciudades y pueblos también tienen sus propias medidas y pueden ser más estrictas si ellos deciden.
¿QUÉ DEBE HACER CON SU MASCARILLA DESPUES DE USARLA?
· Las mascarillas de tela reusables se deben lavar y secar después de cada uso, esto sin dañarlas.
· Las mascarillas desechables se deben tirar a la basura después de cada uso. Por favor no contamine, póngalas en un contenedor de basura.
¿QUÉ MEDIDAS SE ESTÁN TOMANDO A NIVEL ESTATAL PARA DETENER LA PROPAGACIÓN DE COVID-19?
Arizona pasa más de los 100,000 casos de COVID-19 en total el día de hoy. Los casos reportados se han duplicado en las últimas de dos semanas en nuestro estado. Estos han llevado al Gobernador Ducey a prohibir las reuniones, pausar operaciones de algunos negocios y retrasar el inicio escolar en persona para evitar la propagación del virus.
¿PRESENTA USTED SÍNTOMAS DE COVID-19?
