The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for May 26, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: CONTINUED SUCCESS DEPENDS ON YOU
HOSPITALIZATION EPI CURVE
In Maricopa County, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has remained relatively flat over the past month. This indicates physical distancing measures have been working. It is still too early to tell the impact of lifting the “Stay Home” order and gradually reopening businesses and services.
People who are 65 years and older and/or who have had one chronic health condition make up 72% of those who have been hospitalized for COVID-19. Maricopa County Public Health encourages those at highest risk, as well as their friends, loved ones, or other close contacts, to take physical distancing very seriously.
IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT DISTANCE
While most people are aware of the need to stay six feet away from others, it’s also worth remembering that the amount of time you spend with someone also impacts your risk of exposure. The more time you spend in close quarters with a person who is infected with COVID-19, the greater chance you have of becoming infected. Public Health defines close contact as being within 6 feet of the person for 10 minutes or more. So, as you make plans, look for options that allow you to go “in and out” quickly.
WHEN TO SELF-QUARANTINE
If you live in the same home as someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or someone who has symptoms of a new respiratory infection, such as cough or shortness of breath (not allergies or asthma), you should stay at home and away from others (quarantine) for 14-days after the last time you had close contact with the sick person in your household.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING
An excessive heat warning will be in effect for Maricopa County starting at 10 am tomorrow and running through Saturday. Temperatures could top 110 by the end of the week.

LAS ESTADĺSTICAS DE HOSPITALIZACIONES
En el condado Maricopa, el número de personas hospitalizadas con COVID-19 se ha mantenido fijo en el último mes. Esto indica que el distanciamiento físico ha estado trabajando. Es muy temprano para decir el impacto que tendrá que la orden de quedarse en casa haya expirado y que gradualmente se estén abriendo los negocios y servicios.
Las personas que son mayores de 65 años y/o con condiciones de salud crónicas son un 72% de los hospitalizados con COVID-19. Salud Publica del condado Maricopa anima a los que están en alto riesgo al igual que a los familiares, amigos, y contactos cercanos a tomar el distanciamiento físico muy seriamente.
NO SOLO SE TRATA DE LA DISTANCIA
Aunque la mayoría de las personas saben que deben estar al menos seis pies de distancia de otros, también es bueno recordar que la cantidad del tiempo que uno pasa con otros puede impactar el riesgo. Entre más tiempo pase en espacios encerrados con alguna persona que está infectada mayor es su riesgo contraer la enfermedad. Salud Pública define estar en contacto cercano con otras personas cuando está más cerca de seis pies de distancia por 10 minutos o más. Así que a como planea, busque opciones que le permitan entrar y salir rápidamente de algún lugar.
CUANDO SE DEBE PONER EN CUARENTENA
Si usted vive en la misma casa con alguien que dio positivo a la prueba de COVID-19 o con alguien que tiene síntomas de infección respiratoria, como tos, falta de aliento (no alergias o asma) debe quedarse en casa y alejando de otros (cuarentena) por 14 días después de haber estado expuesto a alguna persona enferma en su hogar.

ADVERTENCIA DE EXCESO DE CALOR
Una advertencia de exceso de calor está vigente para el condado Maricopa empezando mañana a las 10am y hasta el sábado. Las temperaturas podrían llegar a los 110 grados para el final de la semana. Encuentre un sitio de hidratación.
