The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for September 15, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: THIS IS A CRITICAL TIME
Your efforts to keep distance from others, mask up, and stay home when you’re sick have allowed us to move around more freely over the past several weeks. But we are still in the middle of a pandemic. With fewer business restrictions in place and many schools reopening, this is a critical time in our fight against COVID-19. Keep up with daily preventive measures so Arizona’s reopening can continue.

HOSPITALIZATION NUMBERS HAVE IMPROVED
As the number of COVID-19 cases has decreased, we have also seen an easing of the pressure on our hospital systems. The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) tracks hospital capacity. You can find data listed on this page under “Hospital COVID-19 Specific Metrics.” According to the ADHS dashboard, there were 550 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, statewide, as of yesterday. This is down from a peak of more than 3,500 in mid-July. The number of ICU beds in use has also decreased.
We want these trends to continue, especially as we face the prospect of both influenza and COVID-19 cases this fall. Please do your part to ease the burden on hospitals and medical professionals by taking personal protective measures that are proven to decrease your chances of getting sick or spreading disease.
DATA BY ZIP CODE
While COVID-19 cases have leveled off or declined across much of the Valley, some zip codes are seeing an increase in cases per 100,000 residents and the percentage of COVID-19 tests coming back positive. You can find data by zip code or school district on our school reopening dashboard.
WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION
Most people who get COVID-19 won’t need to go to the hospital. However, if you are experiencing COVID-like symptoms, and you feel like those symptoms are getting worse, it’s a good idea to call your healthcare provider or seek medical attention.
In adults, emergency warning signs include, but are not limited to:
· Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
· Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
· New confusion or inability to arouse
· Bluish lips or face
People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported — ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. If you’re concerned, it’s worth getting checked or tested.

WHEN SHOULD I GET A FLU SHOT?
You should get a flu vaccine before flu viruses begin spreading in our community, since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against flu. The CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October.
Our three childhood immunization clinics around Maricopa County now have free flu shots for anyone 6 months through 18 years of age. Please call ahead to ensure vaccine is available.

UTILITY ASSISTANCE
People who are struggling to pay their utility bills have options. Both SRP and APS are offering to help customers who are behind on payments, or worried about their next bill. Maricopa County residents outside the cities of Phoenix, Mesa, and Glendale may also qualify for assistance through our Human Services Department.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: SON TIEMPOS CRUCIALES

¿CUÁNDO ME DEBO PONER LA VACUNA CONTRA LA GRIPE?

ASISTENCIA CON SUS GASTOS
Las personas están luchando por poder pagar sus recibos, pero hay opciones. Ambos SRP y APS ofrecen ayuda a los clientes que están retrasados en sus pagos, o que no saben como van a pagar el próximo mes. Los residentes del Condado Maricopa que no son de Phoenix, Mesa y Glendale también califican para fondos a través del Departamento de Servicios Humanos.
