TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: ALL ABOUT ANTIBODIES
WHAT IS AN ANTIBODY TEST?
Antibody (or serology) tests are laboratory tests that look for the presence of antibodies, which are proteins made by the body in response to an infection. An antibody test is able to detect if you’ve had COVID-19 in the past, even if you didn’t have symptoms or know you were sick.The COVID-19 antibody test used by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
DOES EVERYONE WHO IS INFECTED BY COVID-19 MAKE ANTIBODIES?
Most people who are infected by the virus make antibodies within days to weeks of infection. However, some individuals, such as those with depressed immune systems may not make antibodies after they are infected.
HOW CAN WIDESPREAD ANTIBODY TESTING HELP US LEARN MORE ABOUT COVID-19?
We know that, especially early on in the pandemic, not everyone who was infected was tested. We also know that around 40% of people infected with COVID-19 never develop symptoms and may not be included in our case counts. By testing a small number of households in targeted communities for antibodies (we call this a “serosurvey”), we can get a better estimate of how many people throughout our county have been infected with COVID-19 at some point. The communities being surveyed were picked intentionally, in partnership with the CDC, to provide a sample that represents all of Maricopa County. Knowing our true infection rate can help us develop effective public health strategies specific to our community, such as how many people would need to be vaccinated in order to reach a point where the disease cannot spread efficiently.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Field teams will be out in 29 selected communities from September 12–20. Only a handful of participants are needed in each community. Eligible homes have received a door hanger notifying them of the serosurvey.
If your home is randomly selected for participation when surveyors are in your area, our volunteers will come to your home and ask if you and others in your household are willing to participate. If your home is chosen and you are not home when the volunteers come to your neighborhood, a card with information to schedule an appointment will be left. All household members older than six years of age living within the same household can participate. Participation is voluntary and testing is FREE.
WHAT ARE THE RULES ABOUT LARGE GATHERINGS?
Governor Ducey has banned gatherings of 50 or more people in Arizona except in specific circumstances. We know that anytime there are large gatherings, there is higher risk of disease spread. Maricopa County Public Health still recommends people keep their social circle small and avoid large gatherings.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET
It’s 2,408 miles from the heart of Maricopa County to Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, and a few hundred less to the Pentagon, and to Stonycreek Township, PA, where the final hijacked plane crashed into a field 19 years ago after heroes stormed the cockpit.
We are far away in miles, and growing more distant in years, but the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001 and the days and months that followed are felt deeply here, too.
Some of us had loved ones on the planes, or in the Towers. Some of us knew the first responders who gave their lives, or who emerged from the ash against all odds. Many of us knew someone who signed up for the military in the wake of 9/11, looking to serve their country when their country needed it most.
This is a challenging time for us. We’ve had challenging times before. We can never forget 9/11. We will never forget.

The County COVID Rental Assistance (CCRA) program aims to prevent evictions by providing rental payments and other assistance to people who are struggling financially due to COVID-19. You can check eligibility, apply for assistance, and upload documents at maricopa.gov/CovidRentHelp or you can contact your local Community Action Program office to get started.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: TODO SOBRE LOS ANTICUERPOS
¿QUÉ ES UNA PRUEBA DE SANGRE PARA DETECTAR ANTICUERPOS?
Las pruebas de anticuerpos (o serología) son pruebas de laboratorio que buscan detectar la presencia de anticuerpos que son proteínas que el cuerpo produce a una infección. Una prueba de anticuerpos detecta si tuvo COVID-19 en el pasado, aun si no tuvo síntomas o no se enfermó.
¿TODO EL QUÉ SE INFECTA CON COVID-19 PRODUCE ANTICUERPOS?
La mayoría de los que están infectados con el virus producen anticuerpos dentro de varios días a semanas después de la infección. Sin embargo, algunas personas cuyo sistema inmune esta debilitado pudiera no producir anticuerpos después de la infección.
¿CÓMO ES QUE LAS PRUEBAS DE ANTICUERPOS PUEDEN AYUDARNOS A SABER MÁS DE COVID-19?
Sabemos que especialmente al principio de la pandemia, no todos los que estaban infectados se realizaron pruebas. Sabemos que alrededor de 40% de las personas infectadas con COVID-19 nunca desarrollan síntomas y no se incluyen en nuestros números. Al hacer una pequeña cantidad de pruebas en hogares al que le llamamos “serosurvey” nos podemos dar una idea de cuanta gente en todo el condado pudieron haber estado infecatdo con COVID-19 en algún momento.
Las comunidades seleccionadas se han escogido intencionalmente en asociación con CDC, para darnos una representación de todo el Condado Maricopa. El saber el número de infección nos ayuda a desarrollar estrategias de salud pública especificas a nuestra comunidad, tales como cuanta gente necesitarían vacunarse en algún momento para disminuir la propagación efectivamente.
¿CÓMO PODEMOS AYUDAR?
Personal saldrá en equipos a las 29 comunidades seleccionadas del 12 al 20 de septiembre. Solo necesitamos un pequeño número que responda en cada comunidad. Los hogares seleccionados recibieron un volante en su puerta notificándoles de la encuesta.
Si su hogar es seleccionado al azar, nuestros voluntarios llegarán y pedirán hacer la encuesta voluntaria. Si no esta en casa se le dejara información en su puerta para hacer una cita. Todos los miembros de un hogar desde los seis años que viven en un mismo hogar pueden participar. La participación es voluntaria y GRATUITA.
¿CÚALES SON LAS REGLAS SOBRE ESTAR EN GRUPOS DE PERSONAS?
El gobernador Ducey ha prohibido reuniones de 50 personas o más en Arizona excepto en circunstancias específicas. Cuando hay mucha gente junta el riesgo de la enfermedad es mayor. Salud Pública de Condado Maricopa recomienda que las personas evitan grupos grandes.
CUIDE SU SALUD MENTAL
Septiembre es el mes de prevención del suicidio, le recordamos que la salud mental es tan importante como la salud física. Nuestras vidas pueden ser estresantes especialmente durante una pandemia y deja estragos emocionales y físicos. Encuentre recursos locales llamando a la línea directa de respuesta de crisis 2–1–1. No se quede callado hable con alguien.
NUNCA OLVIDAREMOS
2,408 millas de distancia del Condado Maricopa al epicentro Lower Manhantan y pocas menos al Pentágono, y a Stonycreek Township, PA donde el último avión se estrelló hasta 19 años. Estamos muy lejos en millas y ahora a través de los años, pero el sacrificio que se hizo el 11 de septiembre, 2001 y los días y meses posteriores aún siguen vivos.
Algunos de nosotros quizá tuvimos a seres queridos en los aviones o en las torres. A lo mejor conocimos a los socorristas que dieron sus vidas, que surgieron de las cenizas en contra todo. Quizá conocemos a alguien que a raíz del 11 de septiembre se enlisto en el ejército, para servir a este país cuando mas se le necesitaba.
Estos son tiempos difíciles para todos. Y siguen momentos difíciles frente a nosotros. Nunca olvidaremos el 11 de septiembre. Nunca olvidaremos.
