TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: “THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN A GODSEND”

Maricopa County’s crisis rental assistance program is helping families like the Steptoes. When schools shut down because of the pandemic, Tanisha Steptoe had to quit her job to stay home with her six kids while they attended virtual classes. The sudden loss of her income and a drop in sales at her husband’s job meant difficulty paying the bills. Maricopa County’s rental assistance program has helped ease the burden, covering rent as they wait for schools to re-open.

SCHOOL OUTBREAKS & PUBLIC HEALTH’S ROLE

Public Health is reporting 34 total COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools since the beginning of the school year. Parents and guardians can learn what constitutes an outbreak and what actions they can expect from Public Health and their school district by visiting our FAQ page.

SCHOOL SPORTS & PUBLIC HEALTH’S ROLE

Maricopa County does not have regulatory authority over school sports. That authority falls to the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA). The AIA created guidelines for school sports this fall which you can find here Version OptionsK-12 Schools and Childcare Facilities Headline.

UPDATE ON LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES

Residents of long-term care facilities are at the highest risk for serious illness due to COVID-19 because they tend to be older and have chronic medical conditions. To date, there have been 4,275 cases at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospice facilities, with 29% of those resulting in death.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has released guidance for visitation at long-term care facilities and other congregate settings, depending on the level of community spread. Maricopa County is currently seeing moderate spread. You can read the guidelines here.

2 FREE WAYS TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH

Maricopa County is offering free COVID-19 tests and free flu shots throughout the fall.

COVID-19 Testing: Getting a COVID-19 test will help you make informed decisions about going to work, traveling, or other social interactions. Knowing your result will also allow you to better treat and manage symptoms.

Flu Shots: Getting a flu shot now will reduce your risk of getting the flu this year and of getting really sick if you do get the flu. This is important for our health care system at a time when doctor’s offices and hospitals will be treating both flu patients and COVID-19 patients.

El programa de asistencia de renta de crisis en el Condado Maricopa es para ayudar a familias necesitadas. Cuando las escuelas cerraron sus puertas por la pandemia, familias como la de Tanisha perdieron sus trabajos para quedarse en casa con sus hijos mientras estaban en clases en línea. La perdida repentina de salario hace dificil que las familias paguen sus servicios o facturas. El programa de asistencia de renta en el Condado Maricopa ha ayudado a hacer más facil la carga para pagar la renta mientras la comunidad se recupera.

BROTES EN LAS ESCUELAS & ROL DE SALUD PÚBLICA

Salud Pública está reportando 34 brotes de COVID-19 en las escuelas de kínder al 12 grado desde que empezó el ciclo escolar. Los padres u tutores pueden enterarse que significa un brote y que acción deben esperar de Salud Pública y sus distritos escolares visitando nuestra página de COVID-19 y seleccione las preguntas frecuentes de padres de familias sobre las escuelas.

DEPORTES EN LAS ESCUELAS & ROL DE SALUD PÚBLICA

El Condado Maricopa no tiene autoridad regulatoria sobre las actividades deportivas en las escuelas. Esa autoridad recae en la Asociación Interscolastica de Arizona (AIA, por sus siglas en inglés). Existe una guía de AIA para los deportes de este otoño.

2 FORMAS DE TOMAR CONTROL DE SU SALUD

El Condado Maricopa está ofreciendo pruebas de COVID-19 gratis y vacunas contra la gripe gratis.

Pruebas de COVID-19: El hacerse la prueba de COVID-19 le ayudará a tomar decisiones sobre su trabajo, si debe viajar, u otras actividades sociales. El saber el resultado le permite tratar y manejar los síntomas.

Vacunas contra la gripe: El ponerse la vacuna contra la gripe reduce el riesgo de la influenza este año, y de no enfermarse seriamente si es que se llegará a enfermar. Es importante también para no saturar el sistema de salud ya que tanto los doctores como hospitales estarán tratando a pacientes de la gripe y de COVID-19.
