The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and the general public. This is the update for January 12, 2021.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I CAN’T GET A COVID-19 VACCINE APPOINTMENT?

The demand for vaccine far exceeds the supply right now. While we continue to work with our community partners to offer more locations and appointments for those in Phases 1A and 1B, the reality is that vaccinating hundreds of thousands of people is going to take time. Below, you’ll find updates on what actions to take if you, or a loved one, would like to get the vaccine.

APPOINTMENT AVAILABILITY UPDATE

Here is the latest information on appointments as of Tuesday, 1/12 at 5 p.m.

• Appointments for all Phase 1B prioritized populations are still available at the 24/7 State Farm Stadium site run by ADHS. Learn more >
• Appointments for all Phase 1B prioritized populations will open up next week at Grand Canyon University. View announcement >
• Special events are being planned for school staff and law enforcement staff eligible in Phase 1B. This will provide them with a separate option that is mindful of their specific work hours and needs.
• Appointments for adults 75 years and older at local pharmacies are limited to how many doses of vaccine are available. Search for appointments >
• Two of the five original Maricopa County PODs (regional vaccination sites) have some appointments available. See sites and registration links

BOOKING VACCINE APPOINTMENTS ONLINE

The vaccine appointment scheduling system for the State Farm Stadium site operated by ADHS and the southwest and southeast sites operated by Maricopa County is run by Arizona Department of Health Services. We encourage you to go to podvaccine.azdhs.gov to look for and book an appointment.

If you are a senior or someone without access to a computer, you can have a loved one book the appointment for you. That person can use their own email address to receive the confirmation message. WHY ARE PHARMACIES ONLY VACCINATING THOSE WHO ARE 75 AND OLDER?

Maricopa County is working with local pharmacies to increase access to COVID-19 vaccination for one of our highest risk populations, those age 75 and older, who are most likely to be hospitalized or die from COVID-19. This partnership adds to existing federal efforts to utilize pharmacies to provide on-site clinics to vaccinate residents and staff at long-term care facilities. As more pharmacy sites are added to provide vaccine and more doses become available, we will be able to expand to other prioritized populations.

If you are having trouble finding an appointment with pharmacies listed on our website, try looking further out in the schedule or check back in a day or two. As these pharmacies receive additional allocations of vaccine, they will add more appointments.

HOW MUCH VACCINE DO WE HAVE RIGHT NOW AND HOW MUCH DO WE NEED?

We have received more than 200,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to date, and it has all been administered to people or allocated to partners for dispensing. We estimate we will need more than one million doses to vaccinate everyone in Phases 1A and 1B. What that means is that we all have to be patient. As more vaccine is available to more groups of people, more locations will open to provide vaccine. Eventually, we will reach a point where COVID-19 vaccine is available through doctors’ offices, pharmacies, clinics, outpatient providers, and other healthcare facilities, similar to how widely available the flu shot is

A REMINDER ABOUT WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO GET VACCINATED RIGHT NOW

Right now, vaccination appointments are being offered to priority populations in Phase 1B. Information pertaining to each group is linked below:

• Adults 75 and older
• Pre-K-12 Teachers and childcare staff
• Law enforcement and protective services
• Individuals eligible in Phase 1A who still need their first or second doses

If you are not in these groups, it’s not your turn yet. Please be patient. We are working to get the vaccine to as many as possible, as soon as possible.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO GET MY SECOND DOSE?

It is recommended to get your second dose of the Pfizer vaccine three weeks after your first dose. The second dose of Moderna is recommended four weeks after your first dose. Wherever you get vaccinated, ask about the process of scheduling a second appointment. It may be different depending on your vaccination location.

The important thing is that you hold onto the vaccination record card you receive at your appointment, which will tell you which vaccine you got and when you received it. You’ll want to bring this to your second appointment to ensure you get the right vaccine for your second dose.

DO I NEED TO WEAR A MASK IF I’VE RECEIVED THE COVID-19 VACCINE?

COVID-19 is still circulating widely in our community. Even if you’ve been vaccinated, it’s still a good idea to take preventive measures until enough people have been vaccinated that we achieve community immunity.

Remember: an important part of what we’re doing is trying to limit the burden on our health care system. Today, 92% of in-patient beds and 92% of ICU beds in Arizona are full.

Taking preventive measures (such as wearing a mask) helps keep you and your family safe, even after you’ve gotten a vaccine.

WHAT CAN I DO TO SLOW THE SPREAD OF COVID-19?

Medical experts agree that some basic measures can help keep you and your family safe:

• Limit contact with people outside of your household.
• Wear a mask and keep six feet of distance when you are around people outside of your household. Remember, outside is safer than inside.
• Stay home when you’re sick, and be cautious even if you feel well in case you’re asymptomatic.
• Follow quarantine guidelines if you have been exposed to COVID-19.
• Wash your hands regularly.
• Get a flu shot if you haven’t already.
• Get a COVID-19 vaccine when it’s your turn.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: ¿QUÉ DEBO HACER SI NO PUEDO HACER UNA CITA?

La demanda de la vacuna excede la cantidad que tenemos al momento. Seguimos trabajando con socios en la comunidad para ofrecerles mas localidades y citas para los que califican en la Fase 1 A y Fase 1 B, la realidad es que vacunar a miles de personas va a tomar tiempo. A continuación algunas acciones que usted puede tomar si desea la vacuna.

DISPONIBILIDAD PARA LAS CITAS

Esta es la última información para hacer citas hasta este martes 12 de enero a las 5 p.m.

• Citas para la población que es prioridad en la Fase 1B están disponibles las 24 horas 7 días en el estadio State Farm que es organizado por el estado. (más datos)
• Citas para todos los grupos de prioridad de la Fase 1B se abrirán la próxima semana en la Universidad del Gran Cañón. (vea el anuncio)
• Se están organizando eventos especiales para personal de las escuelas y del orden público que son elegibles en la Fase 1 B. Esto les permitirá tener otra opción que se acople a sus horarios de trabajo y necesidades.

HACER CITAS EN LĺNEA SOLAMENTE

LAS CITAS DE LAS FARMACIAS SON SOLO PARA LAS PERSONAS DE 75 AÑOS O MAYORES

Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa se ha asociado con farmacias para ofrecer la vacuna para personas de 75 o mayores. Muchos han reportado que no hay citas disponibles en esas farmacias. Esta asociación es parte de los esfuerzos de las farmacias de vacunar a los residentes y personal de las instalaciones de cuidado de largo plazo. A como Salud Pública reciba más dosis de la vacuna, se podrá contar con más vacunas en estos sitios y ofrecer más citas.

Si usted esta teniendo dificultad para encontrar citas en las farmacias que aparecen en nuestra página, regrese en uno o dos días más. Ya que a como recibamos mas vacunas las farmacias podrían tener mas vacuna disponible.

¿CÚANTA VACUNA TENEMOS AHORA Y CUANTA MÁS NECESITAMOS?

Hemos recibido mas de 200,000 dosis de la vacuna contra COVID-19 hasta esta fecha y ya se a dado a las personas o a los socios que las administrarán. Creemos que necesitamos más de un millón de dosis de la vacuna en las Fases 1 A y 1B. Lo que quiere decir que debemos tener paciencia. Estamos trabajando para expandir las opciones de vacunación, ya sea en oficinas médicas, farmacias y clínicas similar a como cuando encuentra la vacuna contra la gripe.

UN RECORDATORIO PARA LOS QUE SON ELEGIBLES PARA VACUNARSE AHORA

Ahora, las citas para la vacuna se ofrecen solo a grupos de prioridad en la Fase 1 B. Información pertinente para cada grupo en los siguientes enlaces:

• Adultos de 75 o mayores
• Proveedores de educación de Kínder al grado 12 y cuidado infantil
• Agentes del orden público y servicios de seguridad
• Personas elegibles en la Fase 1 A que aun necesitan la primera o segunda dosis

Si uste no está en estos grupos, aun no es su turno. Por favor tenga paciencia. Estamos trabajando para vacunar a cuanta gente sea posible lo antes posible.

¿CÓMO SABRE CUANDO Y CÓMO ME PONGO LA SEGUNDA DOSIS?

Se recomienda que se ponga la segunda dosis de la vacuna Pfizer en tres semanas después de su primera dosis. La segunda dosis de Moderna se recomienda en cuatro semanas después de su primera dosis. Donde quiera que se vacune, pregunte sobre el proceso de hacer cita para la segunda dosis. Pudiera ser diferente para cada proveedor.

Lo importante es que guarde la cartilla de vacunación que reciba en su cita, la que le dirá que vacuna recibió y cuando debe recibir la segunda dosis. Traiga la cartilla a la segunda cita.

¿NECESITO USAR LA MASCARILLA SI YA RECIBĺ LA VACUNA CONTRA COVID-19?

COVID-19 aun esta circulando en la comunidad. Aun si ya se vacuno, es buena idea seguir con las medidas de prevención hasta que exista suficiente número de personas vacunadas para alcanzar inmunidad comunitaria.

Recuerde: es importante que ayudemos a nuestro sistema de cuidado médico. Hoy, 92% de los pacientes internados y 92% de las camas de cuidados intensivos están llenos en Arizona.

El tomar medidas de prevención (como el uso de la mascarilla) no solo le protegen a usted; también protegen a toda la comunidad aun cuando se ha vacunado.

¿QUÉ PUEDO HACER PARA REDUCIR LA PROPAGACIÓN DE COVID-19?

Expertos médicos concuerdan que las medidas básicas pueden ayudar a mantenerlo a usted y su familia seguros:

• Limitar el contacto con personas fuera del hogar.
• Usar una mascarilla y mantenerse a dos metros o seis pies de distancia cuando este fuera de casa. Recuerde, estar al aire libre es más seguro que estar en el interior de un edificio.
• Quedarse en casa cuando este enfermo, y tomar precauciones en caso de que se sienta bien pero este infectado y sea asintomático.
• Seguir la guía de cuarentena si usted ha estado expuesto a COVID-19.
• Lavarse las manos frecuentemente.
• Vacunarse contra la gripe.
• Vacunarse contra COVID-19 cuando sea su turno.
