The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for September 4, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: WHAT WE DO THIS WEEKEND COULD DETERMINE WHAT COMES NEXT IN THE PANDEMIC
A long holiday weekend in the middle of a long pandemic is a tempting time to let your guard down. There are places to go and people to see. But we are at a critical time in this fight against COVID-19, and we cannot afford to have a repeat of the last long holiday weekend. Remember: it was right after Memorial Day Weekend that we began to see a spike in cases.
What we do this weekend could determine whether our case counts continue to remain relatively flat, or whether they increase again.
Please keep taking protective measures, like wearing masks and social distancing. It’s working!
WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND IF YOU’RE STAYING IN TOWN
If you’re planning a get together with friends or family, here’s how you can keep yourself and the people you want to see most safe:
- Try to keep your gathering to fewer than 10 people
- Consider being outdoors instead of indoors (at least during the cooler parts of the day)
- Keep distance between yourself and others
- Follow mask regulations
- And, of course, stay home and away from others if you’re sick
WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND IF YOU’RE TRAVELING
Labor Day Weekend is often seen as the final “hurrah” of summer, and many people choose to get in one last trip. Travel does increase your risk of getting or spreading COVID-19, but for those who choose to go, there are ways to travel safely.
ANTIBODY TESTING PROJECT IS VOLUNTARY
Maricopa County Public Health is partnering with ASU and Mayo Clinic on a “serosurvey” which aims to estimate how many people in Maricopa County have been infected with COVID-19, beyond those who have tested positive for the disease. This involves testing people for COVID-19 antibodies. The information gained will give us a better idea of how many people in the county were infected in the past and are likely immune to the virus for at least a period of time.
We want to emphasize, though, that Public Health is not requiring anyone to participate in the serosurvey; it is completely voluntary.

WHAT IF I HAVE COVID-19 ANTIBODIES?
If you have a positive serology test for COVID-19, that means you likely had the virus at some point. Current studies suggest that COVID-19 antibodies provide at least some immunity. However, because COVID-19 is a novel virus, we don’t know if the antibodies make you immune from getting it again.
The bottom line is, even if you have COVID-19 antibodies, you still need to take preventive measures to decrease the risk of getting (and spreading) the virus.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: MENSAJE DEL DĺA: LO QUE HAGAMOS ESTE FIN DE SEMANA DETERMINARÁ LO QUE SUCEDE CON LA PANDEMIA
Un fin de semana largo en medio de la pandemia nos puede impulsar a bajar la guardia. Hay muchos lugares a los que queremos ir, gente que queremos visitar, pero estamos en un punto crítico en la batalla contra COVID-19 y no podemos repetir lo que paso el último fin de semana largo. Recuerde que fue el fin de semana de recordación que empezamos a ver un ascenso en los casos. Así que lo que hagamos este fin de semana determinará si nuestro número de casos continúa manteniéndose o pueden subir.
Continúe haciendo lo que está haciendo, está funcionado como usar una mascarilla y el distanciamiento social, ¡si está funcionando!
LO QUE DEBE TENER EN MENTE SI USTED NO VA A SALIR DE LA CIUDAD
Si esta planeando reunirse con amigos y familia, hágalo de la siguiente manera:
· grupos pequeños de 10 personas o menos.
· Considere estar al aire libre en lugar de adentro de lugares. (al menos en las horas más frescas del día)
· mantenga su distancia entre usted y lo demás
· siga las recomendaciones del uso de la mascarilla,
· y por supuesto, quédese en casa y aléjese de otros si está enfermos.
LO QUE DEBE TENER EN MENTE CUANDO ESTE VIAJANDO
El fin de semana feriado del día del trabajo es la cola del verano, mucho desean hace un último viaje de verano. El viajar viene con un precio de propagar o contagiarse con COVID-19, pero para aquellos que deciden salir aquí algunas recomendaciones para su seguridad.
EL PROYECTO DE PRUEBAS DE ANTICUERPOS ES VOLUNTARIO
Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa se esta asociando con la Universidad Estatal de Arizona y la Clínica Mayo para realizar una encuesta de anticuerpos llamada “serosurvey” que tiene como meta estimar cuanta gente en el Condado Maricopa pudo haber estado infectada con COVID-19, esto más allá de los que se hicieron las pruebas y resultaron positivos. Estas pruebas serán para buscar anticuerpos. La encuesta ayuda a entender que porcentaje de la población pudiera tener inmunidad al menos por un periodo de tiempo.
Queremos enfatizar, que Salud Pública no está requiriendo a nadie que participe, esta es una encuesta estrictamente voluntaria.

¿QUÉ SUCEDE SI TIENE LOS ANTICUERPOS DE COVID-19?
Si usted dio positivo a pruebas de serología, eso significa que en algún momento tuvo el virus. Estudios muestran que los anticuerpos de COVID-19 proveen algún nivel de inmunidad. Sin embargo, no sabemos si se pudiera contagia una vez más.
En otras palabras, aun si usted tiene anticuerpos de COVID-19, debe seguir tomando medidas de prevención para disminuir el riesgo de contagiarse o propagación del virus.
