Maricopa County COVID-19 Update

The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for May 28, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: EXPANDING COVID-19 TESTING IN CONGREGATE SETTINGS

Maricopa County Public Health is now officially accepting proposals from vendors who can perform COVID-19 testing in Maricopa County, mostly in settings where large groups of people congregate such as long-term care facilities and homeless shelters.

What Interested Contractors Should Know

The request for proposal opened on May 27 and responses must be submitted by June 8th at 2PM. Contractors are expected to provide staff, testing supplies, and personal protective equipment. Interested organizations can view the RFP and respond here >

DOES MARICOPA COUNTY PERFORM COVID-19 TESTS?

Public Health does not conduct COVID-19 testing. Public Health’s primary role is to conduct surveillance and case investigation activities to help inform mitigation strategies needed to help curb the spread of disease in the community. COVID-19 tests are performed by healthcare providers who are trained in specimen collection and infection control procedures.

The Arizona State Public Health Laboratory (ASPHL) is the state public lab entity that receives some COVID-19 test specimens and analyzes them for results; Maricopa County Public Health works with ASPHL and facilitates testing for those who qualify for using that lab. However, there are many private commercial labs that also process test results through relationships with various healthcare providers, hospital systems, and other clinical settings. Anyone seeking testing should contact their healthcare provider or visit azhealth.gov/TestingBlitz for upcoming testing dates and locations.

ARE HOSPITALIZATIONS REALLY GOING UP?

There have been recent reports about a spike in the number of ER visits statewide. This has led to questions about whether serious COVID-19 cases are on the rise. Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, Medical Director for Disease Control at Maricopa County Public Health, says that Maricopa County has continued to see an overall decline in its hospitalization rate due to COVID-19.

HEAT RELIEF NETWORK

An excessive heat warning is in effect through Sunday. Maricopa Association of Governments leads the Heat Relief Regional Network connecting people with hydration and cooling stations during the hottest months of the year.

Planning and Development

There’s not a lot of good economic news out there these days, but data from Maricopa County Planning and Development Department shows some encouraging signs for the nation’s fastest-growing county. Building permit submissions are up substantially year-over-year, with a greater percentage of these being completed online.

Superior Court

Effective June 1, protective masks will be required for everyone entering Superior Court, Justice Courts, Adult Probation, or Juvenile Probation facilities in Maricopa County. The mask requirement was part of a directive from Arizona Chief Justice Robert M. Brutinel and applies to court buildings throughout the state.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: AUMENTEMOS LA CAPACIDAD PARA HACER PRUEBAS DE COVID-19 EN AMBIENTES DE CONGREGACIÓN

Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa está oficialmente aceptando propuestas de compañías que puedan realizar las pruebas de COVID-19 en el Condado Maricopa, estas pruebas se realizaran principalmente en sitios de congregación como instalaciones de cuidado de largo plazo y refugios para personas sin hogar.

Lo que Deben Saber las Agencias Interesadas

La oportunidad para hacer una propuesta empezó este 27 de mayo y culmina el 8 de junio a las 2pm. Las agencias interesadas deben poder proveer el personal, lo necesario para hacer las pruebas, incluyendo el equipo de protección personal.

¿ACASO EL CONDADO MARICOPA REALIZA LAS PRUEBAS DE COVID-19?

Salud Pública no realiza las pruebas de COVID-19. El rol principal de Salud Pública es vigilancia e investigación de enfermedades para implementar estrategias de mitigación y reducir la propagación de enfermedades en la comunidad. Las pruebas de COVID-19 se realizan en oficinas médicas con personal que están entrenados en colectar muestras, y procedimientos de control de infección.

El laboratorio de Salud Pública del Estado de Arizona (ASPHL, por sus siglas en inglés) es un laboratorio de salud pública estatal que recibe las pruebas de COVID-19 y analiza los resultados, Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa trabaja con el laboratorio estatal y colabora para usar el laboratorio para quienes califican. Sin embargo, existen muchos laboratorios comerciales privados que realizan las pruebas en colaboración con oficinas médicas, hospitales, y otros ambientes clínicos. Cualquier persona que está buscando hacerse una prueba debe contactar a su proveedor médico o visitar azhealth.gov/TestingBlitz para fechas o localidades.

ALIVIO DEL CALOR

Existe una advertencia de calor hasta este domingo. La Asociación de Gobiernos de Maricopa encabeza la red regional de alivio del calor conectando a personas con sitios de hidratación y para refrescarse durante los meses más calientes del año.

AGENCIAS DEL CONDADO A SU SERVICIO

Planeación y Desarrollo

En estas fechas no existen muy buenas noticias sobre la economía pero el Departamento de Planeación y Desarrollo del Condado Maricopa muestra señales positivas en nuestro condado que es el condado con mayor crecimiento en la nación. La petición de permisos para construir está subiendo año con año, con un gran porcentaje que se someten en línea.

Corte Superior

A partir del 1 de junio, la Corte Superior, Cortes de Justicia, de Probatoria Adulta, y Juvenil del Condado Maricopa requerirán que las personas que ingresen a sus instalaciones usen las mascarillas protectoras. Este requisito es parte de una directriz del juez principal Robert M. Brutenil e incluye los edificios de cortes por todo el estado.
