The Maricopa County Joint Information Center is providing daily COVID-19 updates for members of the media and general public. This is the update for September 10, 2020.

TODAY’S KEY MESSAGE: COVID-19 CASES INCREASE SLIGHTLY BUT PERCENTAGE OF POSITIVE TESTS CONTINUES TO DECLINE
New data shows mostly encouraging signs about community spread of COVID-19 in Maricopa County. The percentage of positive COVID-19 PCR tests dropped from 5.2% for the week of August 16 to 5.0% for the week of August 23. The percentage of hospital visits for COVID-like illness also declined over that same period from 3.1% to 2.6%. The County did see a slight uptick in COVID-19 cases per 100,000 (51 compared to 43 per 100,000). Public Health will continue to monitor these trends and encourages everyone to be vigilant about wearing masks, keeping distance, and staying home when sick.

WHAT DOES THE NEW DATA MEAN FOR SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES?
The new data does not represent a significant change from last week. Maricopa County, as a whole, continues to see moderate spread, with certain zip codes seeing more transmission than others. Businesses identified as being at higher risk for spreading COVID-19 can continue to operate under the guidelines outlined by Arizona Department of Health Services, while schools are encouraged to look at two weeks of data for their specific area as they make decisions about learning scenarios.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS AN OUTBREAK OF COVID-19 AT A SCHOOL?
As part of statewide emergency measures to combat COVID-19, schools are now required to report outbreaks of COVID-19 to their local health department. A COVID-19 outbreak in a school is defined as having 2 or more PCR-positive cases of COVID-19 among students or staff (who don’t share a household) within a 14-day period.
Should an outbreak of COVID-19 occur in a school, Public Health will conduct case investigations and contact tracing in partnership with the school to identify and notify any students or staff who are determined to be close contacts. Public Health also works with the school to provide appropriate disease prevention and control guidance.
I’M INTERESTED IN GETTING MY FAMILY TESTED FOR COVID-19. WHERE CAN I GO?
COVID-19 diagnostic testing is now widely available, and in many cases, there is no cost due to the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. You can get tested even if you have no symptoms of illness. To locate a community testing event near you or find links to testing providers, visit our testing page.
To date, Maricopa County-backed testing events have served 35 communities in our region and tested nearly 3,000 residents for COVID-19 at no cost to them.
FREE ANTIBODY TESTING
Starting on Saturday, Maricopa County Public Health is partnering with ASU and Mayo Clinic to offer free, voluntary COVID-19 antibody tests in 29 selected communities across Maricopa County. This testing will give you a good idea of whether you had a past COVID-19 infection and have antibodies to the virus. It will also help Public Health understand what percentage of the population has already been infected and likely has some immunity to the disease.
If you receive a door hanger notifying you that your household is eligible to participate, please consider doing so. You’ll be helping Public Health make informed decisions on COVID-19 response based on data specific to our community.
SUICIDE PREVENTION
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and September is Suicide Prevention Month. This public awareness effort is more important than ever during this time of increased isolation and heightened stress. The CDC says there has been a rise in the number of Americans contemplating suicide, with 25% of people ages 18–24 and more than 10% of all those surveyed saying they have seriously considered suicide in the past 30 days.
Please don’t forget about your mental health, and make sure to check in with loved ones to see how they’re doing. These are hard times. It’s okay to ask for help. In fact, it’s good to seek help.
Public Health has resources to support you, whether you want to know the warning signs to watch for, or you need someone to talk with at this moment.

MENSAJE DEL DĺA: SUBEN LOS CASOS LIGERAMENTE DE COVID-19, PERO EL PORCENTAJE DE PRUEBAS POSITIVAS CONTINUA DISMINUYENDO
Nuevos datos muestran señales alentadoras sobre la propagación de COVID-19 en el Condado Maricopa. El porcentaje de pruebas positivas de COVID-19 ha bajado de 5.2% la semana de 16 de agosto a 5.0% para la semana del 23 de agosto. El porcentaje de visitas a hospitales por enfermedad relacionada a COVID-19 ha bajado en ese mismo periodo del 3.1% a 2.6%. ¿QUÉ SIGNIFICAN LOS NUEVOS DATOS PARA LAS ESCUELAS O NEGOCIOS?
Los nuevos datos no representan un cambio significativo comparado a la semana pasada. El Condado Maricopa en general, continúa viendo propagación moderada, con algunos códigos postales viendo más transmisión que otros. Los negocios que son identificados como sitios de alto riesgo de COVID-19 continúan operando bajo las guías diseñadas por el Departemtno de Servicios de Salud de Arizona. Mientras que se les anima a las escuelas a ver dos semanas de datos específicos a sus áreas para saber que se recomienda sobre escenarios de aprendizaje.
¿QUÉ SUDECE SI HAY UN BROTE DE COVID-19 EN UNA ESCUELA?
Como medidas de emergencia estatales para combatir COVID-19, las escuelas ahora se les requiere reportar los brotes de COVID-19 a su departamento de salud locales. Un brote de COVID-19 es una escuela se define como tener 2 o más casos positivos de pruebas PCR entre los estudiantes y personal (que no sean del mismo hogar) dentro de un periodo de 14 días.
Si sucediera un brote de COVID-19 en alguna escuela, Salud Pública realizará investigaciones en colaboración con la escuela y asistirá para dar seguimiento o identificar y notificar a algún estudiante y personal quienes pudieron haber estado expuestos. Salud Pública también trabajará con las escuelas para proveer guía y prevención de enfermedades.
¿SI ESTOY INTERESADO EN QUE MI FAMILIA SE REALICE LAS PRUEBAS A DONDE PUEDO IR?
Las pruebas de diagnósticos de COVID-19 esta disponible en muchos sitios, y en muchos casos no hay costo por el Acta de Respuesta a Coronavirus para Familias Primero. Usted puede hacerse las pruebas aun si no tiene síntomas de la enfermedad. Para localizar un sitio de pruebas visite Maricopa.gov/Pruebas.
Hasta hoy, eventos auspiciados por el Condado Maricopa han servido a 35 comunidades en nuestra región y hecho 3,000 pruebas a residentes sin costo alguno.
PRUEBAS DE ANTICUERPOS
Empezando el sábado, Salud Pública del Condado Maricopa está asociándose con la Universidad Estatal de Arizona y la Clínica Mayo para ofrecer estas pruebas de anticuerpos en 29 comunidades en el Condado Maricopa. Estas pruebas son voluntarias y nos darán una idea si usted tuvo la infección de COVID-19 en el pasado y si tiene anticuerpos. También ayudará a Salud Pública a entender que porcentaje de la población que tuvo la infección pudiera tener algún tipo de inmunidad a la enfermedad.
Si usted recibió un volante o notificación en su puerta es porque su hogar es elegible para participar, por favor considere hacerlo. Usted está ayudando a Salud Pública a tomar decisiones sobre COVID-19 basado en los datos específicos en su comunidad.
CENSO 2020
Se acaba el tiempo para participar en el Censo 2020. Es fácil, seguro e importante. Un conteo correcto significa que Arizona recibiría lo que le corresponde en fondos federales para la infraestructura, respuesta de emergencia, y servicios comunitarios.
