Maricopa County received 48 awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo) for visionary county leadership that improves our residents’ quality of life.

Some of the programs recognized this year include:

Fireplace Retrofit Program, Air Quality

This program retrofits a wood burning fireplace with an air pollution reduction device to help our residents breathe easier.

Secure Data Shredding Program, Risk Management

This program uses a hard drive shredder to make sure any confidential information on hard drives is destroyed before the hard drives are recycled.

Video Appearance Center, Justice Courts

The Video Appearance Center allows people in custody to be taken to one central location where a judge can appear, via video conference, to hear their cases. This has cut court wait times in half.

Read and Feed, Maricopa County Library District

The Maricopa County Library District partnered with St. Mary’s Food Bank to encourage youth to read 20 minutes a day while enjoying a nutritious lunch.

Hassayampa River Preserve, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation

Maricopa County works closely with the Nature Conservancy to preserve and protect the home of nearly 300 species of birds.

El Rio SR-85 Pilot Project, Flood Control

The Flood Control District is removing salt cedar from part of the Gila River along State Route 85 and replacing it with native vegetation, with hopes of reducing the flood risk.

Hepatitis C — Implementation of Screening and Linkage to Care, Correctional Health Services

All inmates who enter Maricopa County’s jail system are offered a comprehenisve screening program for Hepatitis C.

Choose to Change Reentry Program, Sheriff’s Office & Adult Probation

Choose to Change is an eight-week cycle of classes that promotes a new way of thinking for people in Maricopa County jails who are at moderate to high risk of re-offending.

Maricopa County’s programs help modernize county government and increase services to our residents. These are just a few of the talented county employees who make that possible:

Stephany Gallegos, Animal Care and Control

JakinDee Kosaka, Human Services

Vince Hatcher, Sheriff’s Office

On August 22, 2018, Maricopa County held a ceremony to honor the recipients of the 48 NACo achievement awards.

These are the videos that played at the ceremony:

Our NACo ceremony co-host encountered some award-winning programs on his way to the ceremony.
